About

Avera Health, a regional health system based in Sioux Falls, SD, is seeking a compassionate and skilled Respiratory Therapist to join our Healthcare & Medical Services team. In this role, you will provide professional respiratory care to patients across the age spectrum, supporting both acute and chronic cardiopulmonary conditions in a collaborative, patient-centered environment. Working closely with physicians, nurses, and other members of the care team, you will assess, plan, and deliver respiratory therapies, including oxygen therapy, aerosolized medication delivery, chest physiotherapy, airway management, and non-invasive and invasive ventilator support in accordance with established protocols and provider orders. The Respiratory Therapist will perform comprehensive patient assessments, interpret clinical data and diagnostic tests such as arterial blood gases and pulmonary function measurements, and adjust treatment plans based on patient response and evidence-based guidelines. You will be responsible for initiating, managing, and weaning ventilator support; responding promptly to respiratory emergencies and rapid response calls; and assisting with procedures such as intubation, bronchoscopy support, and airway clearance techniques. Accurate documentation of assessments, treatments, patient responses, and education in the electronic medical record is essential to support quality care and regulatory compliance. As part of Avera Health’s commitment to hospitality and stewardship, the Respiratory Therapist will provide clear, compassionate communication and education to patients and families regarding respiratory conditions, equipment use, and self-management strategies. You will help promote safe and effective use of respiratory equipment such as ventilators, BiPAP/CPAP devices, oxygen delivery systems, and nebulizers, ensuring proper setup, maintenance, and infection-control practices. You will also participate in interdisciplinary care planning, rounds, and care conferences to advocate for optimal respiratory management and discharge planning. This position offers the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to improved patient outcomes within a supportive and collaborative healthcare network. Avera Health encourages professional growth, so you may participate in continuing education, in-services, and quality-improvement initiatives related to respiratory care, pulmonary rehabilitation, and evidence-based practice. You will help precept and mentor new staff or students as appropriate, sharing knowledge and modeling best practices in patient safety, compassion, and clinical excellence. The ideal candidate will bring strong clinical judgment, attention to detail, and the ability to remain calm and effective in high-acuity and emergency situations. You should be comfortable working in a fast-paced hospital setting that may include intensive care units, emergency departments, and general inpatient units, as well as supporting respiratory needs in affiliated clinics or long-term care environments as needed. Alignment with Avera Health’s mission—serving communities with respect, dignity, and holistic care—is essential. This is a rewarding opportunity for a Respiratory Therapist who wants to advance their skills, collaborate with an expert care team, and make a daily impact on the lives of patients and families across the Upper Midwest.
