Day (United States of America)Job Summary:

Narcotic Specialist

Prepare, compound, and dispense medications under the supervision of a Pharmacist while supporting all phases of pharmacy operations. This role serves as akey contributor to medication accountability and diversion prevention, ensuring compliance with controlled substance regulations and supporting audit readiness, patient safety, and regulatory standards.

Key Responsibilities:

Medication Accountability & Diversion Prevention (Critical Function)
  • Leadmedication diversion monitoring activities, including data collection, analysis, and reporting across multiple systems

  • Reconcile medication dispensing activity, with a focus oncontrolled substances, ensuring compliance withstate, federal, and regulatory requirements (DEA, Board of Pharmacy, Joint Commission)

  • Identify, investigate, and resolvemedication discrepancies and variances

  • Conductroutine and for-cause auditsto ensure compliance and audit readiness

  • Educate staff onmedication handling, compliance standards, and diversion prevention practices

  • Escalate and reportsuspected diversionto Pharmacy Director in accordance with legal requirements

  • Support continuous improvement ofinternal controls and diversion detection strategies

Automated Dispensing Cabinets (ADC)

  • Manage user access, medication stocking, and system accuracy

  • Monitor inventory levels and adjust par levels as needed

  • Generate reports and investigate discrepancies

  • Perform basic troubleshooting and maintenance

  • Ensure compliance withcontrolled substance handling policies

IV Compounding & Sterile Preparation

  • Perform sterile compounding usingaseptic techniquein compliance with USP standards

  • Prepare small and large volume admixtures, specialty solutions, and syringes (as applicable)

  • Support TPN preparation and equipment maintenance (when applicable)

  • Maintain cleanroom standards and regulatory compliance

Medication Distribution

  • Prepare, label, and dispense medications for pharmacist verification

  • Manage bulk and patient-specific medication fills

  • Deliver medications securely while maintaining patient confidentiality

  • Process missing doses and first-dose requests accurately

Pharmacy Operations & Support

  • Repackage and barcode medications in compliance with regulations

  • Process charges, orders, returns, and inventory reconciliation

  • Support purchasing and supply management

  • Assist with training and mentoring new technicians

  • Perform inspections, outdate tracking, and environmental monitoring

  • Restock code carts and ensure readiness

Required Minimum Education

  • High School Diploma or GED (Required)

  • Bachelor's Other-Preferred

Required Minimum License(s) and Certification(s)

All certifications are required upon hire unless otherwise stated.

  • Registered Pharmacy Technician (Required)

  • Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) (Required)

Required Minimum Experience

  • Minimum2 years hospital pharmacy experienceacross pharmacy operations

  • Experience withautomated dispensing cabinets, inventory management, and medication workflows

  • Minimum1 year experience in inventory management or pharmacy automation systems

Required Minimum Skills

  • Strong knowledge ofcontrolled substance regulations and pharmacy law

  • Proficiency in pharmacy systems and reporting tools

  • Excellentanalytical, problem-solving, and audit skills

  • Strong communication and collaboration abilities

  • Ability to educate and support clinical staff

  • Physical ability to lift 30 lbs and transport materials as needed
