As a Lead Software Engineer on the Marketplace Engineering Team, you will help revitalize our customer-facing tooling across our platform with a comprehensive technical strategy to simplify and amplify these user experiences and the capabilities they enable. This is a 100% remote role in the Chicago area. May require onsite interviews. As a Lead Software Engineer with the Marketplace Team, you will help tens of millions of people find their perfect car match, supported by our 4.7 star Android and 4.8 star iOS apps. Our mission on the Marketplace Engineering team is to build a trusted marketplace that facilitates a simple, fun, and fast experience for car buyers and sellers. We seek candidates with deep expertise in frontend technologies with exposure to backend, a passion for thoughtful user experience design, and the ability to build services that are innovative, intuitive, and impactful for users. You will work on full-stack solutions that support frictionless experiences across Cars.com websites and mobile apps, collaborating across teams to design and develop components and high-performance backend systems. We’re looking for a Lead Software Engineer with 8+ years of aggregate software engineering experience to design and evangelize how we engineer products leveraging state-of-the-art industry best practices. You’ll work with platform and feature teams as well as iOS and Android mobile engineering teams to determine technical needs and constraints. You’ll be a trusted partner and advisor, aligning technical solutions with business goals, guiding complex decisions, and balancing near-term delivery with long-term scalability. You’ll lead, mentor, and enable teams to deliver effectively and efficiently, lead team ceremonies, manage discussions, and drive process improvements. You’ll participate in release planning, automate and de-risk deployments, and set standards for operational metrics, alerting, and runbooks. You’ll cultivate strong cross-functional relationships and act as a force multiplier to align multiple teams toward the best solutions. You’ll contribute to architecture and server-driven UI strategies, ensure flexible and dynamic search interfaces, and explore agentic AI technologies to enhance product experiences, personalization, and intelligent recommendations. Responsibilities & Qualifications
Drive technical excellence by championing best practices in software design, operational maturity, and engineering quality across teams Operate with a high degree of agency and autonomy, collaborating with platform, feature, and mobile teams Act as a trusted partner to Marketplace teams, aligning technical solutions with business goals and guiding decisions Lead and mentor teams, enable effective delivery, and improve processes and cadence Lead team ceremonies, capture action items, and optimize release processes Define and enforce operational metrics, alerting, and runbooks; identify blockers and escalate as needed Set on-call standards and coach teams on data-driven improvements Build and maintain relationships across engineering and cross-functional partners Bridge systems and organizations to deliver optimal solutions Contribute to server-driven UI architecture and implementation for flexible search interfaces Explore and integrate agentic AI technologies to enhance product experience and recommendations Required & Preferred Experience
8+ years of software engineering experience Front-end and back-end experience with JavaScript/TypeScript, Web Components, and familiarity with React, Vue, Svelte, etc. Strong understanding of browser fundamentals (HTML, CSS, DOM, performance) Experience with browser dev tools for layout, tracing, and performance profiling Solid understanding of backend technologies and architectural patterns Proven ability to lead cross-functional initiatives Experience with component-based design systems, theming, responsiveness, and accessibility Passion for UX, developer ergonomics, and performance measurement (Core Web Vitals) Ability to observe, instrument, optimize, and operate what you build (Datadog) Understanding of CI/CD and deployment toolchains (CircleCI, Docker, Amazon EKS, Terraform) Excellent written and verbal communication skills Bonus (Not Required)
Experience with Server Driven UI (SDUI) using GraphQL across web and mobile Production Elixir experience or knowledge Salary & Benefits
