Overview

The primary responsibilities of Chaplains include:

  • Assist personnel and their families with ethical, moral, and spiritual challenges;
  • Provide referrals to other professionals such as social workers, psychologists, or medical personnel; and
  • Prepare, preside over, and administer military ceremonies, spiritual faith tradition services and/or rituals.

To be eligible to apply to the CAF, you must:

  • Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident living in Canada;
  • Be at least 18 years old (17 years old with parental consent), except:
    • For the Paid Education programs, you may be 16 years old (with

parental consent);

  • For the Primary Reserve, you may be 16 years old (with parental
  • consent) and must be enrolled as a full-time student;
  • Have completed at least Grade 10 or Secondary IV in Québec (some jobs
  • need higher levels of education).

Direct Entry Officer Plan

To be eligible to apply, you must have:

  • A bachelor’s degree;
  • A graduate-level degree which equips and develops spiritual/faith tradition leaders;
  • Licensing, accreditation, and/or mandating within your spiritual/faith tradition; and
  • A minimum of two years, full-time credentialed experience as a spiritual/faith tradition leader.

Paid Education Options

The ideal candidate will have a bachelor’s degree from a recognized Canadian university and may be eligible to apply for the Specialist Officer Training Plan (SOTP). Selected applicants will complete graduate level studies and the required two years of full time, post credentialed experience as a spiritual/faith tradition leader.
