The Database Reliability Engineer (DRE) is responsible for ensuring the reliability, scalability, and performance of both legacy and modern data platforms. This role covers installing, monitoring, maintaining, and optimizing Microsoft SQL Server instances (on-prem and in Azure), while also expanding into modern data ecosystems such as Databricks, Google Cloud Platform (GCP), and cloud-native data lakes and warehouses. The DRE will report to Director of IT and will work closely with Engineering, Data, and Business Intelligence teams to enable seamless data delivery and platform reliability across hybrid environments.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Monitor and optimize database performance, availability, and security across SQL Server, Azure SQL, and cloud data platforms.
- Troubleshoot and resolve performance issues, service interruptions, and incidents impacting Engineering and Data teams.
- Support and evolve hybrid environments (on-prem SQL Server, Azure SQL, GCP BigQuery, Databricks Delta Lake).
- Design and implement data reliability, observability, and monitoring strategies using modern tooling (e.g., Prometheus, Grafana, Azure Monitor, GCP Operations Suite).
- Apply OS updates, patches, and cumulative updates to SQL Server VMs (Always-On Availability Groups), ensuring consistency across environments.
- Automate database operations and deployment pipelines (IaC, CI/CD, scripting with PowerShell, Python, Terraform, or similar).
- Implement and monitor regular database maintenance tasks, including backups, restores, and database consistency checks, to ensure data integrity and availability.
- Manage data replication, synchronization, and migrations across on-prem and cloud environments.
- Support data lake and warehouse integrations, optimizing pipelines for BI, analytics, and machine learning workloads.
- Define and enforce data access, governance, and security best practices across hybrid data environments.
- Perform disaster recovery planning and testing across SQL Server, Azure SQL, and cloud-native storage systems.
- Deploy and validate scripts and data models across environments, ensuring adherence to design and compliance standards.
- Create and maintain documentation for both legacy and modern database platforms.
- Act as a point of contact for database and data platform service requests, providing technical support and guidance to internal stakeholders.

Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field.
- Required: Minimum 3 years of experience in MS SQL Server database administration and T-SQL programming (including Azure SQL).
- Experience managing GCP BigQuery (Delta Lake, Spark SQL) and/or Azure.
- Familiarity with data lakes, warehouses, and modern ETL/ELT pipelines (SSIS, ADF, dbt, or equivalent).
- Experience with automation, CI/CD, and Infrastructure-as-Code for data platforms (Terraform, Ansible, or similar).
- Knowledge of monitoring/observability tools for database reliability (Azure Monitor, GCP Operations Suite, or open-source alternatives).
- Ability to effectively triage and resolve complex database reliability issues across hybrid environments.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to provide technical support and collaborate across teams.
- Must be able to handle multiple priorities in a high-demand environment.
