About

Pacific Building Systems (PBS) is a pre-engineered metal building (PEMB) manufacturer seeking a skilled and motivated Design Engineer to join our engineering team. In this role, you will be responsible for the structural design, analysis, and investigation of custom PEMB systems from concept through fabrication-ready drawings. You will work closely with our sales, detailing, and production teams to deliver accurate, code-compliant, and cost-effective building solutions that meet customer requirements and project specifications. This is a high-impact position with a clear path toward Professional Engineer (PE) licensure and long-term career growth within the company.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Structural Design & Analysis
Design structural framing systems for custom PEMB projects using industry-standard engineering software and engineering calculation principles.
Perform structural analysis and calculations for main frames, roof and wall systems, mezzanines, cranes, and other building components.
Ensure all designs comply with applicable building codes (IBC, AISC, ASCE, MBMA) and customer project specifications.
Optimize structural designs for material efficiency and cost competitiveness without sacrificing performance or safety.
Evaluate and incorporate project-specific loading conditions including wind, snow, seismic, collateral, and live loads.
Engineering Documentation & Drawings
Produce and review engineering calculations, stamped drawings, and design packages for permit and fabrication purposes.
Coordinate with detailers to ensure design intent is accurately reflected in fabrication drawings and erection documents.
Review and approve shop drawings, erection drawings, and connection details for technical accuracy and code compliance.
Maintain organized project documentation in accordance with PBS engineering standards and quality processes.
Collaborate with sales coordinators and estimators to provide preliminary design input, budgetary framing assessments, and value engineering recommendations.
Interface directly with customers, builders, and contractors to clarify design requirements, respond to RFIs, and resolve field issues.
Partner with production and detailing teams to support efficient fabrication scheduling and drawing release timelines.
Participate in design meetings and contribute to development of PBS design and detailing standards, including standard connection details, and engineering templates to improve consistency and efficiency across projects.
QUALIFICATIONS Required
3+ years of structural engineering experience in the PEMB industry
Proficiency with PEMB structural design software (e.g., MBS, RISA, or equivalent)
Working knowledge of IBC, AISC, ASCE, MBMA, and relevant building codes and load standards
Ability to read, interpret, and produce structural drawings and engineering calculations
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail
Effective written and verbal communication skills for cross-functional team collaboration
Preferred
5+ years of PEMB design engineering experience
Active PE license or EIT certification with commitment to obtaining PE licensure within the first 6 months of employment
Familiarity with AutoCAD, Tekla, or other structural detailing platforms
