Job Summary
The Lead Data Engineer is an expert at working with business partners to understand their data needs and develop technical designs and requirements. This role leads extraction, transformation, and storage of the firm’s data assets to achieve better operational efficiencies and provide better services to clients through modern data movement pipelines. In collaboration with other data engineers, data architects, and IT teams, the Lead operationalizes and documents data extraction and ingestion platforms, develops strategies, policies, and governance models to ensure accurate, timely, and relevant data, and provides guidance and mentorship to junior data engineers. Job Duties
Works with stakeholders and data architects to define and design data solutions to support the firm’s data initiatives. Understands and locates where data assets exist within the firm’s systems and designs solutions integrating disparate data sources to solve problems and provide business value. Collaborates with project managers to provide effort estimates and offers technical leadership in solution design and requirements. Works closely with data governance to ensure principles are followed through day‑to‑day data usage and solution design. Prepares mock‑up solution designs, visualizations and reports to demonstrate proposed solutions and deliverables. Acts as a subject‑matter expert, evangelist and catalyst to educate on the firm’s data platforms and best practices related to data hygiene. Meets regularly with business line customers to understand business processes and evolving data needs, and identifies potential data‑related projects. Works with data scientists and developers to use emerging technologies such as AI and machine learning to uncover hidden patterns and trends. Builds and maintains constructive relationships with project team members, vendors and other departments involved in projects, systems, and IT strategies. Serves as a technical expert and lead to other team members, reviewing proposed solution designs, conducting code reviews and troubleshooting advanced technical issues. Identifies and executes continuous improvement efforts to keep the firm’s data accurate and timely. Works closely with Information Security and Compliance teams to ensure the data strategy meets internal and external regulatory requirements. Collaborates with BDO Global and other member firms to ensure standards are followed for reusable models and rapid deployment of shared technology. N/A Education
High School Diploma or GED, required. Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Management, Mathematics, or Statistics, preferred. Experience
Eight (8) or more years working as a data engineer, data analyst, or similar roles. Eight (8) or more years with Power BI, Tableau or similar data visualization products. Five (5) or more years within a commercial cloud platform such as Microsoft Azure, AWS, or GCP. Three (3) or more years using version control tools (Azure DevOps, GitHub). Demonstrable proficiency in developing and understanding custom and ad‑hoc SQL queries. Experience working in a large, complex enterprise with significant regulatory and compliance requirements. Experience using a modern scripting language such as Python, Scala, R, or Java. Professional service firm experience. Software Skills
Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office suite, specifically Excel. Strong proficiency in SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) or similar. Strong proficiency in Power BI, Tableau, Looker, Qlik, or similar. Other Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Strong analytical, organizational and problem‑solving skills. Excellent written communication skills, maintaining accurate documentation and technical authorship of complex documents. Ability to facilitate meetings efficiently and effectively. Ability to follow an issue through to its logical conclusion and to escalate as necessary. Ability to work independently as well as part of a team, including providing technical leadership to less experienced colleagues. Excellent interpersonal and customer relationship skills. Capable of working in a deadline‑driven environment, handling multiple complex projects simultaneously with detail focus. Capable of working well under pressure while dealing with unexpected issues professionally. Ability to work after hours and weekends as needed. Capacity to travel as needed. Salary
National Range: $138,000 - $170,000 Maryland Range: $138,000 - $170,000 NYC/Long Island/Westchester Range: $138,000 - $170,000 Location
