Mechanical Design Engineer II

Dept - Engineering

Pay Range - $90k-100k/yr

Onsite Daily in Beverly, MA

Notes - Must haves for this role are 6 years’ experience in Medical, Semiconductor, or Aerospace/Defense related field. Have knowledge of electromechanical/mechanical products. Advanced skills in drawing creation in Solidworks, GD&T, and design knowledge. Please see the attached job posting for other requirements.

Summary/Objective

Client is a leading manufacturer of precision motion control equipment including precision servo actuators, planetary gearsets, and strain wave gearing components and integrated gears. We take pride in providing both standardized and customized motion control solutions to meet customer needs and ensure customer satisfaction. We are looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer II to design, develop, and document new gearing solutions working directly with customers, sales engineers, and other departments. A proficiency in CAD design and detailing, preferably using SolidWorks, is required.

Essential Functions

Design and develop electromechanical/mechanical products according to the customer’s specification and create internal and customer facing documentation to meet customer requirements adhering to company and ASME standards. This may include collaborating with colleagues in Japan and Germany.

Perform analysis, troubleshooting, and testing at the component and systems level for products in development as well as in production.

Develop test and assembly procedures, fixtures, and reports to ensure customer requirements are met.

Work with purchasing and manufacturing to source vendors for component purchases and create bills of materials within the ERP system as well on assembly drawings.

Work with relevant departments (i.e. Quality, Manufacturing, Assembly, etc.) to evaluate deficiency reports and suggest actions. When necessary, prepare deviation or change requests for items requiring customer approval.

Participate or sometimes lead in root cause investigations and analyses.

Ability to effectively communicate technical information to sales, customers, and vendors.

Manage and prioritize multiple projects with the daily engineering tasks effectively.

Follow and make recommendations to improve upon Harmonic Drive’s development processes and procedures.

Technical leadership and some project management skills.

Mentor and train your fellow engineers.

Qualifications: Qualifications

Competencies:

Intermediate mechanical experience in a manufacturing environment.

Demonstrate electromechanical design creativity and pragmatic problem-solving skills, with the ability to design with manufacturing ease and cost in mind.

Strong engineering drawing knowledge and interpretation of GD&T practices with a clear understanding of manufacturing and inspection capabilities and limitations.

Strong understanding of engineering documentation control practices.

Strong knowledge of mechanical power transmission and motion control components and associated calculations.

Ability to generate accurate reports to clearly document and communicate findings.

Knowledge of application and new product development processes.

Strong computer skills (SolidWorks, Microsoft Office, ERP, etc.).

Ability to work and lead across teams and communicate clearly with colleagues, customers, and partners in a professional and cooperative manner.

Ability to lead, prioritize, and complete multiple tasks in an accurate, timely, and organized fashion.

Willingness to take ownership of projects.

Knowledge in project management practices.

Knowledge of data processing and analysis tools using programming languages such as object-oriented programing, Python, Matlab, Minitab, Ansys, etc. is a plus.

Ability to do failure analysis and to present detailed reports of findings.

Experience and knowledge in manufacturing, assembly, testing, and automated processes.

Understanding of various inspection tools and methods and the ability to interpret inspection data and reports (CMM, FAIR, etc.).

Knowledge of ISO 9001 and AS9100 requirements is a plus.

Strong results-driven and self-directed individual with personal commitment to excellence.

Understanding of and appreciation for the importance of customer satisfaction.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Work Environment

This job operates in a professional, open-concept, office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, and photocopiers as well as electrical and environmental test equipment located in a dedicated laboratory.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time salaried position which operates Monday through Friday during normal business hours. Except when working with customers and colleagues in different countries and time zones on a limited basis.

Travel

Travel domestically and internationally, when required, up to 10% of the time.

Required Education and Experience

BS in Engineering is required. MS preferred.

~4-8 years of engineering experience with industrial product design and development.

Certification in SolidWorks a plus.

Certification in GD&T a plus.
