About
Job Description
The DHS Database Administrator's primary responsibility will be to work with application developers to
integrate databases with applications. They will collaborate with developers and project team members,
analyze requirements, model data structures, and create efficient database schemas. They will be
responsible to manage SQL database backups, recovery procedures, and be a liaison with the Division of
Enterprise Technology (DET) in the validation of server patching, software upgrades, user access
controls, and the creation of new servers or database in the Enterprise SQL or Oracle environment.
The DBA must have experience with SQL Database services and management tools. These tools include
SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS), Visual Studio 2022, Red Gate Comparison, Report Builder,
Oracle SQL developer tool and SQL Plus.
The candidate will be responsible to ensure that changes are planned and follow proper DHS change
management policies and that database structures are maintained in accordance with the Department of
Health Services security policies, compliance regulations, and business requirements. Strong
communication with different stakeholders both verbally and written are necessary for success in this
position.
This role requires interaction with cross-functional teams. These teams may be comprised of people from
other State Departments with various levels of Database and application development knowledge and
experience. The teams may include Technical Administrators or business professionals from program
areas, infrastructure, application development, or 3rd party Vendors.
A strong candidate will also have knowledge and experience with current Oracle database tools such as
OEM, SQL Plus, and SQL developer. Candidates that have knowledge or experience in Informatica
Source and Target management are a plus.
This position does require a degree of creativity with some latitude provided to produce solutions where
needed.
Experience with meeting government regulations on security, data encryption as defined by the
regulations is recommended.
Experience with enterprise class applications with mission critical functionality which contain sensitive
and or regulatory information such as MARS-E 2.2, HIPAA, or PII is highly recommended.
Recommended skills, abilities, and certifications:
Certification as a MS SQL DBA
BS in computer science or related engineering field

Requirements

Experience with SQL database and services in supporting application development teams.
Experience with current and legacy versions of SQL
Collaborate with developers and project team members, analyze requirements user requirements, model
data structures, and create efficient database schemas.
Experience writing complex SQL queries to retrieve, manipulate, and update data within the database.
Skills recommended for a more than acceptable candidate:
Experience in PowerBI with reporting or database analysis
Experience with supporting Oracle databases for Java applications.
Experience in the migration of application databases to a new platform
