TEKsystems is looking for a Senior WiFi Network Engineer for the largest public university in the Pacific NW. This candidate should have a passion for WiFi and wireless engineering, as well as the ability to lead a small team!

This role has a hybrid working environment with 2 days on-site in Seattle (University District area) and 3 days from home.

We are looking for candidates who are highly experienced in and passionate about WiFi, as well as possessing:

Expertise in wireless protocols, cloud-based wireless solutions, and the ability to collaborate with diverse stakeholders.

Ability to lead a team of 4-5 engineers with varying levels of experience

This University's Information Technology department is the central information technology organization for the University , responsible for strategic planning, oversight, and direction of the University ’s IT infrastructure, resources, and services. THey provide critical technology support to all three campuses.

We are looking for a Senior WiFi Engineer to help expand and enhance the Wi-Fi network and services for the University’s 3 campuses, 3 hospitals and several remote sites around the area. The position is responsible for the design, support and operation of the Wi-Fi network and related systems. This work includes partnering with network and security teams to support and /or design network architecture required to support the Wireless network and participate in joint projects.

WiFi Engineers also:

• Identify ways to improve services offered and lead projects to implement them

• Provide consultation to other University departments

• Manage projects

• Identify and solve operational issues

• Train and provide support for other Network Engineers and Specialists in other units

• Identify new technologies and determine if or when they should be considered

• Provide detailed documentation to support wireless services

• Provide support for ancillary services such as monitoring and authentication systems

Position Complexities:

Qualified candidate must have in-depth knowledge and experience designing, documenting and operating a large Enterprise Wi-Fi network, RF design and troubleshooting Wi-Fi performance issues. Experience with controller-based wireless networks, Wi-Fi design and survey, and troubleshooting are essential. Use of RF analysis equipment such as spectrum analyzers are also required.

This position also requires proficiency in other network standards including cabling standards, ethernet, TCP/IP, DHCP, routing, QoS, VoIP and information security practices.

A Wireless Network Engineer is expected to have expertise in contemporary network technologies and protocols including those such as TCP/IP, OSPF, IPv4, IPv6, QoS, and VoIP.

This position supports the Wi-Fi network at the University which spans three academic campuses, three hospitals, and many remote sites and clinics throughout the state of Washington. This position will play a critical role in supporting University's Medicine’s increasing reliance on Wi-Fi and also in transitioning to their next generation Wi-Fi network. The Wi-Fi network encompasses around 300 buildings which include residence halls, research facilities, office space, large auditoriums, as well as outdoor areas. The network consists of over 16,000 APs operated by 40 controllers and provides access to over 110,000 concurrent users during peak usage and over 200,000 unique devices each day.

The wireless network is vital to all aspects of faculty, staff and students everyday life and is used throughout the University in critical applications supporting classrooms, research, student life, and access to administrative systems and many others.

Network Engineers are responsible for the planning and design of the wireless infrastructure and service offerings, definition of configuration standards, coordination of projects from design through installation and operational transition, and acting as an escalation for operations and support staff.

Network Engineers also:

• Identify ways to improve services offered and lead projects to implement them

• Provide consultation to other University departments

• Manage projects

• Identify and solve operational issues

• Train and provide support for other Network Engineers and Specialists in other units

• Identify new technologies and determine if or when they should be considered

• Provide detailed documentation to support wireless services

• Provide support for ancillary services such as monitoring and authentication systems

REQUIREMENTS:

Bachelor’s Degree in communications engineering, computer science, or related field or equivalent experience

Minimum 5 years of experience in network engineering, implementation, or operations including the following:

architecting, designing, and deploying advanced, large-scale, high-volume and reliable networks

proven experience managing projects

highly disciplined troubleshooting methodology, paying close attention to detail

maintaining detailed configuration and testing documentation

ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team

Experience must include:

design, deployment, and support of a large WLAN infrastructure in critical environments

testing wireless products including access points, controllers and other WLAN infrastructure and client devices for evaluation

documentation, integration, customer support documentation, and service development

Understanding of AAA and IP network security

Knowledge of 802.11 family and related protocols

Administration and operation of wireless management systems

Experience should also include:

VLANs, DHCP, DNS, IP management and other necessary data network standards.

Excellent understanding of interconnection and troubleshooting techniques for WAN/LAN hardware to include routers, controllers, LAN switches, wireless access points, client devices, RF design, spectrum and protocol analysis

Demonstrated excellent written/oral communication skills, technical documentation skills, user liaison skills, and personal interaction abilities

DESIRED:

Experience managing large Wi-Fi networks in healthcare, higher education, or other highly critical environment

Experience with Juniper/Mist access points and management interface

Experience with ArubaOS software and associated Aruba WLAN infrastructure

Experience with Voice over IP, Voice over WLAN, QoS and other related services

Experience using and managing Airwave monitoring system

Experience with ClearPass service policy and administration

Experience with Ekahau Site Survey or similar product for predictive designs and site survey analysis

Familiarity of 5G cellular protocols, CBRS, neutral host technologies

Familiarity of AI terminology and applications

Familiarity of ITIL/ITSM standards

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $60.00 - $70.00/hr.
