The ACLU seeks applicants for the full‑time position of
DevOps Engineering Manager
in the
Technology Department
of the ACLU’s National office in
New York, NY .
This is a
hybrid role
with in‑office requirements of two (2) days per week or eight (8) days per month.
The Technology Department covers both analytics and product & engineering, providing trusted, dependable, and impactful solutions that advance the ACLU mission.
The team builds best‑in‑class products, services, and infrastructure, while ensuring privacy, security, algorithmic fairness, and transparency.
WHAT YOU'LL DO Reporting to the
Head of Engineering , the DevOps Engineering Manager will give technical leadership and operational oversight for shared infrastructure and enablement across data, analytics, and product engineering.
YOUR DAY TO DAY
Manage and mentor a team of DevOps engineers, fostering growth and impact.
Prioritize DevOps work across steady‑state operations and major initiatives, managing capacity and surfacing risks, constraints and trade‑offs.
Coordinate cross‑functional work, communicating plans, sequencing, dependencies and progress.
Translate ambiguous initiatives into actionable plans with well‑scoped phases and tracking.
Provide technical and architectural leadership for infrastructure and platform decisions.
Serve as liaison to IT and InfoSec, clarifying responsibilities and aligning on strategy, security, timelines and implementation details.
Establish on‑call coverage, incident response, escalation paths, and post‑incident learning.
Develop documentation, standards and tooling to improve reliability and scale engineering effectiveness.
Recruit, onboard and develop team members, fostering inclusive culture.
Advise on resource planning and staffing models.

WHAT YOU'LL BRING
Experience leading technical projects in DevOps, SRE, infrastructure or platform engineering at scale.
Demonstrated success coordinating or directly managing engineers.
Hands‑on experience deploying and optimizing production systems on major cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP).
Experience improving DevOps practices (configuration management, monitoring, incident response, reliability).
Knowledge of server‑side languages and frameworks (Python, Flask, PHP, Node.js).
Designing, implementing and scaling cloud infra, CI/CD pipelines and modern DevOps workflows.
Contributing to code bases and infrastructure‑as‑code tools (Terraform, CDK, AWS CDK).
Containerization and orchestration (Docker, ECS).
Monitoring and observability tools (DataDog, New Relic, CloudWatch).
Acting as a technical point of contact for production or architecture challenges.
Communicating technical options and trade‑offs to diverse audiences.
Operating effectively in ambiguous environments with competing priorities.
Strong people‑leadership skills – mentorship, coaching and professional development.
Excellent communication skills, conveying complex concepts clearly.
Preferred
Database administration and optimization (Redshift, MySQL, MS SQL Server).
Partnering with security teams to implement baseline controls.
Supporting data or analytics workloads with experimentation or research environments.
COMPENSATION The salary for this position is
$188,816
per year (Level D) for a New York, NY location.
Salary may adjust regionally for authorized work outside the listed location.
