QTS is a leading provider of data center solutions supporting mission-critical infrastructure for enterprise and federal customers. Our internal platforms, including QTS OS and SDP, power operations, security, and customer experience across global data center environments.
This role is critical to scaling QTS OS as a modern platform while driving the transformation of SDP from a legacy monolith into a cloud-native system. The impact of this role directly influences system reliability, developer productivity, and our ability to deliver features quickly and securely to customers.
We are seeking a Principal Software Architect to lead platform architecture through hands-on engineering (~60%) and technical leadership. This role focuses on real systems, real tradeoffs, and measurable outcomes.
*Hands-On Architecture & Engineering (~60%)*
* Design and implement scalable AWS architectures.
* Build reference implementations and POCs.
* Contribute to production code and review PRs.
* Define API standards (REST/GraphQL).
* Drive event-driven architectures using EventBridge, SNS, and SQS.
* Work on both greenfield systems and legacy modernization.
*Event-Driven Architecture (Explicit Expectations)*
* Design fan-out patterns using SNS/EventBridge for decoupled systems.
* Implement asynchronous workflows using SQS and event orchestration.
* Define clear event contracts and versioning strategies.
* Balance eventual consistency vs strong consistency based on business needs.
* Apply event-driven patterns pragmatically (avoid over-engineering/event overuse)
*Architecture Leadership*
* Lead design reviews and technical deep dives.
* Establish and enforce architecture standards.
* Own ADRs and decision-making discipline.
* Align teams on scalable, consistent patterns.
* Partner with DevOps and engineering leadership.
*Security & Platform Architecture *
* Design identity and access patterns (Entra ID, Okta).
* Implement IAM and JWT-based authorization.
* Drive zero-trust architecture principles.
* Ensure compliance with federal/regulatory requirements.
*AI-Driven Engineering *
* Use Claude Code and OpenAI Codex in daily engineering work.
* Define AI-assisted development standards.
* Improve debugging, automation, and code generation with AI.
* Drive measurable productivity gains across teams.
*Communication & Alignment *
* Present to engineering and business stakeholders.
* Create high-quality documentation and architecture artifacts.
* Bridge technical decisions with business outcomes
*Required Qualifications *
* U.S. Citizenship required.
* 8+ years engineering experience.
* Strong AWS and backend experience.
* Microservices and event-driven systems.
* Security architecture knowledge.
* Strong debugging and system design skills
*Preferred Qualifications.*
* AWS Solutions Architect certification.
* DDD and hexagonal architecture (pragmatic use).
* Mobile (Swift) exposure.
* Platform engineering experience
