Modeler/Data Scientist I
to lead modeling efforts related to population-level spread of infectious diseases, specifically tuberculosis. This Data Scientist/Modeler will work with Dr. David Dowdy and the JHU Center for Tuberculosis Research at JHU on two projects that aim to forecast the population-level impact of TB vaccines and demand-generation interventions, respectively. This position is ideal for candidates looking to boost their academic productivity and reputation (e.g., through first-author manuscripts and collaborations with content experts) over a 1.5-year timeframe.
The Data Scientist I will support the management of complex databases as well as develop, maintain, and document code. The Data Scientist will collect and extract data using a variety of data extraction tools and carry out data management, visualization, and analysis tasks.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities Support the development of calculations and reports, which will require programming. Support the development and tuning of epidemiological models, which will require programming. Support the development of infrastructure for cleaning and processing data and running experiments to evaluate system performance. Mine various data resources for development of key metrics, calibration targets, and general data useful for planning and research study design. Perform error analysis and model calibration; suggest and implement improvements. Other duties as assigned.
In addition to the duties described above Develop epidemiological models and calibrate those models to available data. Participate in the development of data tools and resources for these analyses. Conduct calculations and analyses to support the use of data (including in the scientific literature).
Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's Degree. Four years of relevant quantitative research and analytics experience, with at least two of those years including complex programming experience. Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond a high school diploma/graduation equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications
Master's or Doctoral Degree in Epidemiology or related field. Experience with coding in R (or python), including the use of generative AI tools and best practices for data reproducibility (e.g., tidyverse), visualization (e.g., ggplot), and version control (e.g., git). Experience in developing mechanistic models for infectious diseases.
