Clare County Council/ Comhairle Contae an Chláir is the authority responsible for Local Government in County Clare. The corporate headquarters are located at Áras Contae an Chláir, New Road, Ennis and there are four Municipal Districts (Ennis, Shannon, Killaloe, and West Clare) which are supported through area offices in Ennis, Scarriff, Shannon, Ennistymon and Kilrush. There are 28 elected members, approximately 990 staff and an annual operating budget of €204 million in 2026.
Clare County Council provides a diverse range of services across a large geographic area. Key services areas include planning, Local Enterprise Office, community development, transportation, motor tax, water, environment, emergency services along with housing, libraries, and sports & amenities, property management, derelict sites, and vacant homes. These operations are supported by internal services which include ICT, corporate, finance and human resource functions.
An opportunity now exists in Clare County Council for the position of County Librarian.
Job Summary/Description:
With a network of 14 branches and headquarters, Clare Library Service plays a key role as a frontline service reaching through the rural and urban communities. The library service has developed strong partnerships with various organisations and groups throughout the County.
Visitor numbers are continually growing, and the service continues to expand. The successful candidate will be required to implement strategies to attract new visitors and retain active members through ongoing marketing and promotion, the provision of high-quality book stock and other items (including online resources), the ongoing upgrades to library buildings and engagement and collaboration with others to provide a range of activities, events and exhibitions for a range of demographics.
The County Librarian will implement national and local library and arts development plans, as well as fulfilling objectives around digital technology, STEAM initiatives, and engaging with local community groups and organisations and working closely with other staff and teams to deliver high quality library and cultural services to the public.
