Performs complex database development and management of County-developed database applications for specialized agency needs; installs, tests, implements, and maintains database management systems and related products operating multiple versions on multiple hardware platforms; handles special projects of all sizes and degrees of complexity from concept to completion; performs related work as required.
Essential Duties
Position Overview
We are seeking a motivated Junior Database Administrator to join our central IT team. This position focuses primarily on SQL Server administration and management, while also providing secondary support for data analysis platform setup and maintenance to enable our data analyst team. This position is ideal for an individual with database management abilities who also possesses an interest in building an analysis platform to interpret data for actionable business recommendations. The successful candidate will join an established team of DBAs responsible for maintaining the health and performance of our enterprise databases providing 24x7 enterprise database administration, guidance, and support to developers, user employees and/or application vendors in the installation, operation, application and maintenance of various database platforms while working closely with our internal developer teams, data analysts, and various county departments and offices on leveraging data to make insightful decisions on county business needs.
The position will administer enterprise databases with a focus on Microsoft SQL Server. RDBMS support includes vendor turn-key applications and in-house development. This position will also be responsible for aiding in the software development life cycle that includes application and database analysis, design, coding, testing, and implementation. The position will report to the leadership of an IT Manager I (Lead Database Administrator).
Highlighted DBA Responsibilities:
Management: Install, configure, and maintain databases in both standalone and clustered high availability configurations, process monitoring, performance tuning, and general troubleshooting. In addition, the successful candidate will be able to support our OLAP, Reporting, and Data Transformation projects as well. Backup & Recovery: Help to safeguard the continuity of county operations by ensuring the integrity and reliability of our backup and restore procedures as well as our disaster recovery plans. Security: Implement and maintain database security (user and services accounts, permissions, etc.) and ensure compliance with department policies. Optimization: Monitor the health and performance of our systems, identifying and resolving bottlenecks before they can escalate to safeguard optimal database operations and minimal impacts on our applications. Operations: Work closely with our System Administrators, Network, and Security teams to support capacity planning, storage management, and other infrastructure-related duties. Highlighted Data Analysis Responsibilities:
Collaboration: A core capability of this position requires the ability to work closely not only with I.T. staff but also with the heads and business users of various county departments as well. The intention is to understand their data needs, provide analytical support, and anticipate future needs. Data Analysis Platforms: Assist in setting up and configuring the SSRS and Power BI reporting environment for organizational use. Maintain underlying data infrastructure for dashboards and reports. Query Development: Develop efficient SQL queries to extract, manipulate, and analyze data from various sources. Manage data connections and gateways to ensure secure and reliable access for reporting. Data Governance: Support the development and implementation of data governance policies and ensure data security, accuracy, and quality. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ideal candidate will need to have hands-on working knowledge in one or more of the following RDBMS platforms: Microsoft SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MariaDB, MySQL or similar RDBMS platform. Candidate must have some experience and working skills in database administration, information theory, backup/recovery, performance, installation and patching. Working knowledge of Windows or Linux operating systems, storage devices, networking, shell scripting a plus. Knowledge of T-SQL, stored procedures, DDL (table, view and trigger definitions), Reporting Services, Analysis Services, and Integration Services; Ability to prepare technical reports; Knowledge of Information Technology practices, methods, principles and techniques relative to database administration; Have the desire and interest to stay informed of the latest developments in Information Technology and the ability to translate the information into enhancing database performance and availability; Available as a team member to provide 24x7 support; Desired, but not required is knowledge of Microsoft's SQL Server Always-On High Availability environment. Also desired is programming knowledge and experience supporting the software development life cycle. The candidate must be able to communicate clearly in writing and verbally, participate in design and implementation meetings, work under time constraints with minimal supervision, and work well as a part of a team composed of Information Technology personnel. Preferred Qualifications:
MS SQL Server DBA or similar certifications. Hands on experience in SQL 2016/2019/2022+ Always-On High Availability configuration, support, and troubleshooting. Experience of managing and developing SQL Server, BI Suite, database custom tools using SQL Server Data or similar. 1+ years of experience in supporting/maintaining Data Warehouses.

The hiring department anticipates filling this position at the
IT Database Administrator I or II level with an anticipated hiring range of $72,060.36 - $84,911.15
depending on the qualifications of the successful applicant and the needs of the organization at the time of hire. The position may be filled at the IT Database Administrator III or Senior level based on the qualifications and experience of the selected candidate. Salary placement above the anticipated range may be considered for candidates whose qualifications significantly exceed the expected requirements of the position and would correspond to the approved range for the hiring level.
This position is part of a Career Development Plan (CDP), offering opportunities for advancement within the IT Application Developer series. The requirements of each level are listed below:
IT Database Administrator I: Graduation from high school/GED including completion of some relevant coursework at the college level and two (2) years of relevant work experience; OR any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. (Grade HP.29 - $72,060.36 - $132,558.42)
IT Database Administrator II: Two-year degree in a relevant IT field of study and two (2) years of relevant work experience; OR any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. (Grade HP.30 - $75,519.45 - $138,921.57)
IT Database Administrator III: Four-year degree in a relevant IT field of study and two (2) years of relevant work experience; OR any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. (Grade HP.31 - $79,144.58 - $145,590.17)
IT Database Administrator Senior: Four-year degree in a relevant IT field of study and four (4) years of relevant work experience; OR any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. (Grade HP.32 - $82,943.73 - $152,578.89)
