Job Responsibilities The mission of the South Carolina Department of Education is to serve students, support teachers, empower parents, and engage the community so that every student graduates prepared to reach their full potential. Job Purpose:
The South Carolina Department of Education (SCDE), Office of Information Technology, seeks an experienced Salesforce Developer to support the design, development, and delivery of Salesforce-based solutions that serve students, educators, and school districts across the state. This role plays a critical part in SCDE's ongoing digital transformation initiative, enabling the agency to modernize its systems and improve service delivery to constituents statewide. The ideal candidate brings deep hands-on Salesforce development expertise combined with a strong understanding of public sector workflows, data governance requirements, and integration with legacy education systems. This individual will collaborate closely with business stakeholders, project managers, and technical leads to translate education program requirements into scalable, secure, and user-friendly Salesforce solutions.
Responsibilities: Design, develop, configure, and deploy custom Salesforce solutions supporting SCDE programs including student services, grants management, educator licensing, and compliance tracking. Develop and maintain custom Apex classes, triggers, Batch Apex, Lightning Web Components (LWC), Aura components, Visualforce pages, and Flow/Process Builder automations. Architect and implement MuleSoft integration flows connecting Salesforce with SCDE legacy systems, state data warehouses, federal reporting platforms (e.g., EDFacts), and third-party education data providers. Ensure all solutions meet state and federal security, privacy, and compliance requirements including FERPA, IDEA, and SC state data governance policies. Participate in technical discovery sessions alongside product and platform leads, document business requirements, and translate them into detailed technical specifications. Manage high-volume data operations including data migrations, bulk imports/exports, and SOSL/SOQL optimization for large education datasets. Collaborate with the SCDE project management office, agency stakeholders, and vendor partners using Agile/Scrum methodologies. Conduct peer code reviews, maintain technical documentation, and uphold development standards and best practices across the Salesforce platform. Provide Tier 2/3 technical support for production Salesforce environments and assist in diagnosing and resolving platform issues. Stay current with Salesforce platform releases, evaluate new features for agency applicability, and recommend improvements to existing solutions. Work within established Salesforce platform standards, governance practices, and deployment processes to ensure consistency and long-term maintainability. This position is located in the Office of Information Technology. Minimum and Additional Requirements
A high school diploma and work experience in the modification and maintenance of system programs, the design and development of system software, or the testing and debugging of system software. An associate's degree or a bachelor's degree in a related field may substitute for the required work experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor's degree and a minimum of 3-5 years of hands-on Salesforce development experience or equivalent combination of experience and demonstrated capability. Proficiency in Apex, Lightning Web Components (LWC), Aura, Visualforce, Batch Apex, SOSL, and SOQL. Experience building and maintaining MuleSoft integrations (Anypoint Platform) connecting Salesforce to external systems. Demonstrated experience with high-volume transaction environments and large-scale Salesforce data operations. Experience with Salesforce Flow, Process Builder, and declarative automation tools. Proven ability to translate complex business requirements into effective technical specifications and working solutions. Salesforce or MuleSoft certifications required, including Salesforce Platform Developer I; Platform Developer II, Platform App Builder, Integration Architect, MuleSoft Certified Developer (Level 1 or 2), or Application/System Architect also accepted. Experience working in a government, education, healthcare, or similarly regulated and compliance-driven environment preferred. Preferred: Experience with Salesforce Education Cloud, Nonprofit Success Pack (NPSP), or Public Sector Solutions; familiarity with K-12 student information systems (PowerSchool, Skyward, Infinite Campus); knowledge of EDFacts, IDEA, and Title I federal reporting requirements; experience with Copado or other Salesforce DevOps platforms.
