The hands-on role involves setting technical direction and architectural guidance, supporting teams through all phases of SSDLC. It spans systems architecture/design oversight, DevOps, security best practices and day-to-day leadership with a focus on enabling teams to build and maintain sustainable, scalable systems that meet complex business and technical requirements.
Responsibilities
Define and maintain Azure reference architectures for secure, scalable, multi-tenant SaaS products. Lead system design and implementation across hybrid systems Provide hands-on technical guidance, including architecture/design reviews, code reviews, and production troubleshooting. Partner with DevOps and platform teams to establish and enforce standards for CI/CD, infrastructure as code, test automation, observability, reliability and monitoring. Own engineering execution including sprint predictability, delivery timelines and release quality Oversee containerization and orchestration strategies using modern tooling. Balance innovation with pragmatic technical debt management Design and maintain Azure security and governance frameworks, including identity, access control, and policy management. Manage and develop a small cross-functional engineering team, setting expectations, conducting performance reviews, and supporting career growth. Partner with product and engineering leaders to align architecture decisions with roadmap priorities. Work closely with Engineering, IT and DevOps leadership on adopting cloud best practices including IaC, immutable infrastructure and environment parity. Skills
Deep expertise in Microsoft Azure services, architecture patterns, and cloud-native design Strong background in building multi-tenant SaaS platforms. Experience with modern development (C#, .NET, or similar) practices, contemporary frontend frameworks. Hands-on knowledge of containers and orchestration platforms. Practical experience implementing CI/CD pipelines and infrastructure as code. Solid understanding of cloud security, identity management, and governance controls. Ability to mentor engineers while remaining actively engaged in technical work. Clear communication skills across technical and non-technical stakeholders. Pragmatic and results-first driven approach to intra- and cross-department collaboration. Qualifications
10+ years of hands-on experience in software engineering, with significant focus on Azure-based architectures. Minimum of 5 years of engineering team leadership and management in an agile environment Proven experience designing and operating cloud-native SLAs driven SaaS applications Experience in recruiting, developing and retaining high-performing engineering talent Demonstrated ownership of architecture decisions across application and infrastructure layers. Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience). Ability to work in or regularly travel to Rochester, NY preferred; U.S.-based remote candidates considered with periodic travel for planning and collaboration.
Supervisory Responsibility
This role oversees a small cross-functional engineering team.
Work Location
This role supports remote work while allowing for in-person collaboration when required in the Rochester, NY area. Work arrangements and location may change over time.
Physical Demands
The physical demands described here represent those necessary for an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. This role is primary office-based and involves extended periods of sitting, as well as frequent hand use for typing and writing. The position also requires the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Occasional standing, walking, or bending may be necessary. The employee must be able to lift up to 10 pounds regularly and up to 25 pounds occasionally, which may include office supplies or small office equipment. Adequate visual acuity is essential for tasks involving reading, writing, and computer work.
Position Type and Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position. Some flexibility in hours is allowed, but the employee must be available during the "core" work hours of Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.
