About

Job Description Join our innovative Mapping organization as we build next-generation mapping systems that utilize automated, ML-driven pipelines for map reconstruction powered by onboard sensor data. These systems are essential for enhancing localization, perception, simulation, and autonomy at a national level. The Role We are seeking a Senior Machine Learning Engineer to lead the technical efforts for automated map reconstruction within our Mapping Engineering team. In this pivotal role, you will design and implement comprehensive ML and computer vision pipelines that reconstruct, validate, and maintain essential map elements, such as lanes, boundaries, and traffic signs, utilizing large-scale sensor data. Your contributions will directly enhance the reliability of next-generation maps deployed across diverse road conditions nationwide. This is a hands-on position that emphasizes technical leadership. You will work with autonomy to define strategies in complex and ambiguous problem areas and guide cross-functional collaborations involving Mapping, Perception, Localization, Simulation, and Infrastructure. Additionally, you will mentor senior engineers and elevate the standards of ML and CV practices throughout our organization. Responsibilities Lead the architecture and implementation of ML-driven map reconstruction systems that function at a national scale, utilizing multi-modal sensor data such as cameras, LiDAR, and radar. Create and maintain end-to-end pipelines for offline map reconstruction, including data collection, labeling, model training, and deployment. Set the technical direction and architectural plans for next-generation mapping technologies, ensuring a balance between innovation and operational reliability. Facilitate the development and integration of advanced computer vision and ML methodologies (e.g., detection, segmentation, 3D reconstruction) applied to mapping challenges. Oversee cross-functional initiatives, collaborating closely with teams focused on Perception, Localization, Simulation, and Platforms to define necessary interfaces and integration points. Drive excellence through design reviews, mentorship, and providing technical guidance to senior and staff-level engineers across various teams. Identify and resolve system-level issues within data pipelines, ML models, and production operations. Act as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for ML-based mapping and reconstruction within our Mapping organization and the autonomous vehicle division. Contribute to technical roadmaps and assist in building capabilities within the Mapping organization for ML and CV expertise. Minimum Qualifications (Must-Have) 5+ years of practical experience in building and deploying ML or computer vision systems in operational settings. Solid foundational knowledge in computer vision, machine learning, or robotics, with direct experience in designing and training ML models. Proficient in Python for ML development; familiarity with C++ or other systems programming languages is advantageous. Experience constructing large-scale data pipelines for ML, managing dataset creation, labeling processes, training, and evaluation. Demonstrated capability to lead intricate, cross-functional technical projects with a high degree of independence. BS, MS, or PhD in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Robotics, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent work experience. Strong systems thinking skills, with the ability to interpret end-to-end ML systems beyond individual models. Preferred Qualifications (Nice-to-Have) Experience with mapping, localization, perception, or robotics systems, especially in autonomous driving or mobile robotics. Hands-on knowledge of 3D perception and BEV representations. Familiarity with AV sensor data challenges (camera, LiDAR, radar) and real-world complexities (noise, drift, long-tail scenarios). Proven success in deploying ML models into production with monitoring, validation, and iterative improvement processes. Exposure to simulation-based validation, synthetic data generation, or map change detection workflows. Experience in mentoring senior engineers or serving as a technical lead across teams. Compensation:
This role offers a salary in the range of $185,100 to $335,300, depending on the candidate's experience and expertise. Additional performance-based incentives may be available. Benefits:
General Motors provides a comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental, vision, flexible spending accounts, retirement plans, paid time off, and GM vehicle discounts, among others. As part of our commitment to employee well-being, GM offers a vehicle evaluation program upon successful completion of a motor vehicle report review. Join us in our vision of a world with Zero Crashes, Zero Emissions, and Zero Congestion, and become a part of a team that is dedicated to making meaningful change in mobility and technology.
