SUMMARY:
The Primary Care Physician is responsible for providing comprehensive primary healthcare services to incarcerated individuals within a correctional facility. This includes diagnosing and treating acute and chronic illnesses, managing preventive care, and coordinating with a multidisciplinary team to ensure the delivery of quality healthcare services within a medical home model.
Location: Levenworth Correctional Facility, 1300 Metropolitan Ave, Leavenworth, KS 66048
Hours: Full-time, 40 hours a week
Comp: $275,000 - $300,000 annually based on experience

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
The successful applicant should be able to perform all of the following functions at a pace and level of performance consistent with the actual job performance requirements:
Primary Healthcare Services:
- Conduct thorough medical evaluations, physical examinations, and medical histories for incarcerated individuals.
- Diagnose and treat a wide range of acute and chronic illnesses, injuries, and infections.
- Develop and implement individualized treatment plans, prescribing appropriate medications, therapies, and interventions.
- Order and interpret diagnostic tests, such as pharmaceuticals, laboratory work, radiological examinations, and screenings.
- Provide vaccinations, perform health screenings, and promote preventive care measures within the correctional population.
- Basic technical skills such as suturing, splinting and injections.
Chronic Disease Management:
- Monitor and manage chronic diseases prevalent among incarcerated individuals, such as diabetes, hypertension, asthma, HIV/AIDS, and Hepatitis C.
- Ensure proper medication management, including prescribing, adjusting dosages, and monitoring treatment effectiveness.
- Educate patients on disease management strategies, lifestyle modifications, and medication adherence.
- Collaborate with specialty care providers for consultations and referrals, when necessary.
Emergency Medical Services:
- Respond to medical emergencies within the correctional facility, providing immediate assessment, stabilization, and necessary interventions.
- Coordinate with emergency medical services or arrange for transfers to external medical facilities, when required.
- Participate in emergency preparedness planning and training exercises to ensure efficient emergency response within the correctional setting.
Collaboration and Coordination:
- Work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team, including nurses, psychologists, psychiatrists, dentists, social workers, and other correctional staff, to ensure coordinated and integrated healthcare delivery.
- Communicate effectively with healthcare team members, providing necessary information, consultations, and referrals.
- Participate in case conferences, team meetings, and quality improvement initiatives to enhance the overall healthcare delivery system.
Documentation and Compliance:
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date medical records, including patient histories, diagnoses, treatments, and medications administered.
- Adhere to patient confidentiality regulations and ensure the security and privacy of medical records.
- Comply with all relevant laws, regulations, and policies governing correctional healthcare and professional ethical standards.
Professional Development:
- Stay updated with the latest advancements in primary care, correctional medicine, and relevant healthcare regulations.
- Engage in continuous professional development activities.
- Provide training and education to correctional staff on primary healthcare topics, as needed.
Qualifications:
- Medical degree (MD or DO) from an accredited institution.
- Current and unrestricted medical license to practice medicine in the state/jurisdiction where the correctional facility is located and DEA.
- Valid state identification.
- Experience in primary care, preferably with experience in correctional medicine or working with underserved populations.
- Strong diagnostic and clinical skills, with the ability to manage a diverse range of acute and chronic medical conditions.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and collaboration skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a challenging and dynamic environment.
