Your Role and Responsibilities As an Apprentice Hardware Design Technician at IBM, you will have the opportunity to learn hands-on about the mechanical packaging and design of electronic sub-assemblies such as power systems, thermal management, I/O interfaces, planar boards, interconnect frames, brackets, and covers, which are integral to our z and Power systems. You will utilize three-dimensional (3D) CAD tools like Catia, Creo, and Solidworks to aid your learning experience. Throughout your apprenticeship, you’ll collaborate closely with experienced engineers and mentors, applying your knowledge to design components, assemble early hardware builds, and perform application verification testing. This role will provide you with invaluable hands-on experience with prototypes, troubleshooting field failures, implementing solutions, and operating measurement and machining equipment (including 3D printers) within the mechanical design team. About the Apprenticeship The IBM Apprenticeship Program is a registered apprenticeship recognized by the Department of Labor (DOL). Graduates receive a nationally-recognized credential from the DOL. During the program, you will engage in both required learning hours and on-the-job training tailored to ensure you develop the skills vital for success in this role. You'll have the flexibility to learn at your own pace, with an expectation for most apprentices to complete their learning within 12 months. Upon graduation and certification from our program, you will have the opportunity to apply for full-time roles at IBM. Who You Are! An apprenticeship is fundamentally about learning. The ability to work independently while staying organized and efficient
Capable of collaborating as part of a team
Strong troubleshooting skills
A foundational understanding or experience in mechanical, industrial, or related engineering concepts, including:
3D CAD tools like Catia, Creo, Solidworks
Design for Manufacturability principles
Tolerance Analysis
Knowledge of fabrication processes, particularly in sheet metal and plastics
Material Engineering
What’s the Experience? As an apprentice, you will join a local cohort of other apprentices. You'll begin together with initial weeks focused on learning about IBM and the skills you will acquire during your apprenticeship. Subsequently, you will work with managers and mentors to navigate your personalized skills roadmap, demonstrating new knowledge and competencies through hands-on applications with your project teams. This position does not qualify for visa sponsorship, and there is no relocation available for this role. Required Technical and Professional Expertise A willingness to fulfill the requirements of the apprenticeship program
