About
The experience expected from applicants, as well as additional skills and qualifications needed for this job are listed below.
The Utility Sustainability Engineer is responsible for the reliable, compliant, and cost-effective operation of GMP-critical utilities supporting Drug Substance (DS) and aseptic Drug Product (DP) fill-finish, with strong emphasis on both black utilities (boilers/steam, condensate recovery, chilled/hot water, cooling towers, electrical LV/MV, HVAC plant) and clean/sterile utilities (WFI generation/storage/distribution, RO water loops, clean steam, CIP/SIP media, clean compressed gases, sterile utility interfaces). Reporting to the Senior Manager, Utilities, this role delivers day-to-day technical ownership, continuous improvement, and lifecycle management through AI-enabled/digital strategies, lean transformation, and disciplined financial stewardship. The role also supports the site sustainability program, focusing on F Gas/GWP reduction, water stewardship, metering/data integrity, and initiatives to lower the carbon footprint while maintaining validated states and utility quality.
Principle Responsibilities
Utilities Operations & Reliability: Operate and optimize utility systems to meet capacity, quality, and availability targets across BDS and DP; own performance for black utilities (boilers/steam systems, chilled/hot water plants, cooling towers, electrical LV/MV, HVAC plant) and clean utilities (WFI/PW loops, clean/pure steam quality, CIP/SIP media, clean compressed gases); monitor trends, respond to alarms, and execute precision maintenance to improve uptime, MTBF, and energy performance, including chiller/coldroom sequencing and validated-state protection.
AI & Digital Execution: Build and maintain data pipelines and dashboards from CMMS, BMS/MS, PLCs, analyzers, and historians; apply advanced analytics and support machine learning models for predictive maintenance, anomaly detection, and energy/water optimization; ensure data integrity and CSV-aligned changes with validated meters/sensors (TOC, conductivity, temperature, flow, pressure) for quality and sustainability reporting.
Lean & Continuous Improvement: Implement 5S, Standard Work, visual management, use structured problem-solving, FMEA, and RCM inputs to reduce unplanned downtime, nuisance alarms, steam/water losses, and utility energy waste; document, qualify, and sustain improvements across boiler rooms, chiller plants, WFI skids, PW loops, and AHUs.
Compliance & Qualification: Execute and maintain URS, DQ/IQ/OQ/PQ documentation, periodic reviews, alarm/limit management, and criticality assessments for black and clean utilities; ensure utilities remain in a validated state and compliant with GMP, HPRA/FDA, EHS, environmental, and F Gas requirements (registers, leak checks, recovery logs, phase-down plans, end-of-life handling).
Quality & EHS: Maintain clean utility quality specifications (e.g., WFI microbiological/TOC/conductivity, clean steam dryness/non-condensable gases/superheat, compressed gas purity) and classified area environmental controls; complete risk assessments (HAZOP), support audits/inspections, and drive safe systems of work and permit-to-work adherence for utilities and sustainability initiatives.
Troubleshooting & Investigations: Lead/author technical investigations, deviations, and change controls for black and clean utilities; perform data-driven RCA and implement effective CAPAs with verification of effectiveness; deploy FDD to identify inefficiencies, leaks, sensor drift, biofilm risks, and control issues across AHUs, chillers, WFI/PW loops, clean steam generators, and coldrooms.
Project Support & Start-up: Support utilities projects, upgrades, and obsolescence programs from scope/URS through FAT/SAT, commissioning, and handover; embed metering and energy/water KPIs into design and acceptance criteria; coordinate contractor/vendor activities and ensure as-built documentation accuracy and performance guarantees for water systems, clean/pure steam, chillers, HVAC, metering, and sterile interfaces.
Financial Stewardship: Track and report utilities OPEX drivers (energy, water, maintenance, spares); identify and deliver cost and energy/water savings; contribute to business cases/CER inputs and lifecycle cost analyses; implement measurement and verification (IPMVP-aligned where applicable), manage rebates/incentives, and update budgets/forecasts with realized benefits.
Stakeholder Collaboration: Partner with Operations, Quality, Validation, EHS, Facilities, Digital/IT, and Finance for scheduling, shutdown coordination, change control, and right-first-time execution; align with site sustainability governance (Scope 1/2 reductions, refrigerant emissions, water stewardship) and support internal/external reporting and audits.
Documentation & CMMS: Maintain SOPs, work instructions, P & IDs, datasheets, loop sheets, calibration records, F Gas logs, and quality test records; plan and close work orders and PMs in the CMMS with high data quality and cGMP documentation standards; sustain validated metering/sub-metering documentation and audit trails.
On-Call/Shift Support: Provide out-of-hours engineering support as required to maintain compliant and continuous operations.
Sustainability Program: Support (Targeted) Baseline and optimize energy in boilers, chillers, AHUs to reduce kWh, peak demand, and tCO2e; drive decarbonization (heat recovery, heat pumps, electrification, high-efficiency burners, condensate return, free cooling); maintain F Gas compliance with phase-down and leak prevention; reduce WFI/PW losses and CIP/SIP media usage; design/maintain electrical, thermal/steam, water, and gas sub-metering with validated data traceability.
Qualifications
Experience: 3–7 years in Pharmaceutical/Biotech or highly regulated manufacturing with hands-on ownership of black and clean utility systems supporting DS and/or DP aseptic operations, and demonstrable delivery of energy/water/carbon improvements.
Technical Expertise: Working knowledge of WFI generation/storage/distribution, clean/pure steam, purified water, CIP/SIP utilities, clean compressed air/gases, HVAC/AHU for classified areas, BMS/MS, chilled/hot water systems, boilers, cooling towers, electrical distribution (LV/MV), chillers/refrigeration and coldrooms/freezers, metering/sub-metering, and CIP/SIP interfaces.
Commissioning & Validation: Proficiency with URS, DQ/IQ/OQ/PQ, calibration/metrology, alarm philosophy, and maintaining validated states during energy and water optimizations; competent with P & IDs, URS/specs, and FAT/SAT protocols.
AI/Digital Skills: Practical experience using data historians, BMS/MS trends, CMMS analytics, and dashboards; familiarity with SPC, FDD, and basic scripting or data tools (e.g., Excel/Power BI or similar); strong understanding of CSV and data integrity requirements.
Lean & Reliability: Demonstrated application of 5S, Standard Work, FMEA/RCM, and root-cause tools to improve uptime, energy intensity, and maintenance effectiveness; Green Belt or equivalent experience is beneficial.
Regulatory & EHS: Solid understanding of GMP, HPRA/FDA expectations for utilities, Health & Safety regulations, environmental compliance, and F Gas stewardship; experience preparing for and supporting audits/inspections, especially for clean utility systems.
Soft Skills: Strong analytical and problem-solving ability, clear written and verbal communication, stakeholder management, and the ability to work independently and in cross-functional teams with a focus on delivery and continuous improvement.
Desirable: Experience with digital twins/energy modeling, heat pump integration for WFI pre-heat/return loops, advanced chiller/steam controls, vibration/condition-based monitoring, power quality analysis, and ISO 50001 energy management or IPMVP M&A; familiarity with corporate carbon/water accounting and sterilizing-grade utility interfaces.
Education
HETAC Level 8 (or equivalent) in mechanical, chemical, electrical, mechatronics, energy, or pharmaceutical engineering, or a related engineering discipline. Advanced degree and/or certifications in energy management (e.g., CEM), refrigeration/F Gas, reliability, or automation/CSV are advantageous.
