About

Position Summary
Please read the information in this job post thoroughly to understand exactly what is expected of potential candidates.

The Utility Sustainability Engineer is responsible for the reliable, compliant, and cost‑effective operation of GMP‑critical utilities supporting Drug Substance (DS) and aseptic Drug Product (DP) fill‑finish, with strong emphasis on both black utilities (boilers/steam, condensate recovery, chilled/hot water, cooling towers, electrical LV/MV, HVAC plant) and clean/sterile utilities (WFI generation/storage/distribution, RO water loops, clean steam, CIP/SIP media, clean compressed gases, sterile utility interfaces). The role reports to the Senior Manager, Utilities and delivers day‑to‑day technical ownership, continuous improvement, lifecycle management through AI‑enabled/digital strategies, lean transformation, and disciplined financial stewardship. It also supports the site sustainability program, focusing on FGas/GWP reduction, water stewardship, metering/data integrity and initiatives to lower the carbon footprint while maintaining validated states and utility quality.

Principal Responsibilities

  • Operate and optimize utility systems to meet capacity, quality and availability targets across BDS and DP; own performance for black and clean utilities, monitor trends, respond to alarms, and execute precision maintenance to improve uptime, MTBF and energy performance.
  • Build and maintain data pipelines and dashboards from CMMS, BMS/MCS, PLCs, analyzers and historians; support predictive maintenance, anomaly detection and energy/water optimization.
  • Implement 5S, Standard Work, visual management, structured problem‑solving, FMEA and RCM to reduce unplanned downtime, nuisance alarms and utility energy waste.
  • Execute and maintain URS, DQ/IQ/OQ/PQ documentation, periodic reviews, alarm/limit management and criticality assessments; ensure utilities remain validated and GMP‑, HPRA/FDA‑, EHS‑ and FGas‑compliant.
  • Maintain clean‑utility quality specifications, complete risk assessments, support audits, and drive safe systems of work and permit‑to‑work adherence.
  • Lead technical investigations, deviations and change controls; perform data‑driven RCA, CAPA implementation and verification; deploy FDD to identify inefficiencies, leaks and control issues.
  • Support utilities projects, upgrades and obsolescence programmes; embed metering and energy/water KPIs in design and acceptance criteria; coordinate contractor/vendor activities and ensure as‑built documentation accuracy.
  • Track and report utilities OPEX drivers; identify and deliver cost and energy/water savings; contribute to business cases, lifecycle cost analyses and implement measurement and verification.
  • Partner with Operations, Quality, Validation, EHS, Facilities, Digital/IT and Finance for scheduling, shutdown coordination and change control; align with site sustainability governance and support reporting and audits.
  • Maintain SOPs, work instructions, P&IDs, datasheets, loop sheets, calibration records, FGas logs and quality test records; plan and close work orders and PMs in CMMS with high data quality and cGMP standards.
  • Provide out-of-hours engineering support as required.
  • Baseline and optimize energy in boilers, chillers and AHUs to reduce kWh, peak demand and tCO2e; drive decarbonisation, maintain FGas compliance, reduce WFI/PW losses and CIP/SIP media usage; design and maintain validated submetering.

Qualifications

  • Experience: 3–7 years in pharmaceutical/biotech or highly regulated manufacturing with ownership of black and clean utility systems supporting DS and/or DP aseptic operations and demonstrable energy/water/carbon improvements.
  • Technical expertise in WFI, clean steam, purified water, CIP/SIP utilities, clean compressed air/gases, HVAC/AHU, BMS/MCS, chilled/hot water, boilers, cooling towers, electrical distribution, chillers, sub‑metering and CIP/SIP interfaces.
  • Commissioning and validation proficiency with URS, DQ/IQ/OQ/PQ, calibration, alarm philosophy and maintaining validated states during optimisations.
  • AI/digital skills using data historians, BMS/MCS trends, CMMS analytics, dashboards, SPC, FDD and basic scripting or data tools.
  • Lean and reliability experience with 5S, Standard Work, FMEA/RCM and root‑cause tools; Green Belt or equivalent is beneficial.
  • Regulatory and EHS understanding of GMP, HPRA/FDA utility expectations, health & safety, environmental compliance and FGas stewardship; audit and inspection experience.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills, clear communication, stakeholder management and ability to work independently and in cross‑functional teams.
  • Desirable: digital twins, heat pump integration, advanced chiller controls, vibration monitoring, power quality analysis, ISO 50001, IPMVP M&V, corporate carbon/water accounting and sterilising‑grade interfaces.

Education

HETAC Level 8 (or equivalent) in mechanical, chemical, electrical, mechatronics, energy or pharmaceutical engineering, or a related engineering discipline. Advanced degree and/or certifications in energy management (e.g., CEM), refrigeration/FGas, reliability or automation/CSV are advantageous.
