Process Design Lead – Water & Wastewater
Take the next step in your career now, scroll down to read the full role description and make your application.

Location: Dublin (regional role across Ireland)

Employment type: Permanent, full-time

Are you a process / hydraulic engineer who wants more ownership, more variety, and a real say in how projects are delivered?

This is a fantastic opportunity to step into a Design Lead role in Ireland, taking the technical lead on water and wastewater infrastructure projects from concept through to construction, commissioning and operation.

You’ll join a collaborative multi‑disciplinary team and play a key role in shaping sustainable, efficient treatment solutions that genuinely impact communities across Ireland.

The opportunity

As Process Design Lead, you’ll be the go‑to person for Process & Hydraulic Engineering within a regional portfolio of projects. You will:

  • Own the process, hydraulic and mechanical design across multiple water and wastewater schemes
  • Lead the development of robust engineering solutions from feasibility and optioneering through detailed design and into commissioning
  • Work closely with MEICA, civil and structural teams in a genuine “one-team” environment
  • Develop and review process documents including PFDs, intelligent P&IDs, control philosophies and constructability assessments
  • Lead or significantly contribute to:

    • Process & mechanical design reports
    • Hydraulic & process calculations, energy balances
    • Equipment selection, specifications and motor/instrument lists
    • Whole‑life cost and lifecycle performance assessments
    • Site layouts focused on operability, maintainability and safe construction
    • Support design assurance: HAZOPs, ALMs, design reviews, constructability and CDM compliance
    • Provide hands‑on technical support to site and commissioning teams, ensuring design intent is delivered on the ground
    • Act as a key technical contact for clients and stakeholders, helping to resolve queries and keep projects on track

This role offers a broad mix of office, digital collaboration and site interface, giving you visibility across the full project lifecycle – not just the design phase.

What you’ll bring

We’re looking for someone who combines strong technical capability with practical, delivery‑focused thinking:

  • Bachelors degree with honours in Chemical, Water/Wastewater, Environmental, Process Engineering or closely related discipline
  • 5+ years’ relevant experience in process/design engineering, ideally in water, wastewater or process industry projects
  • Strong knowledge of process and hydraulic design for treatment systems – including calculations, equipment selection and process modelling
  • Confidence in preparing and reviewing:

    • PFDs and P&IDs
    • Control philosophies / automation inputs
    • Constructability and operability assessments

  • Experience coordinating designs across MEICA and civil/structural disciplines
  • Familiarity with digital engineering tools / CDEs such as BIM 360, ACC, ProjectWise or similar
  • Proven ability to engage with clients and third‑party stakeholders, leading technical discussions and resolving queries
  • Chartered Engineer status (or working towards it)
  • Experience mentoring junior engineers and designers
  • Background in design & build or contractor‑side delivery, with a focus on buildable, cost‑effective solutions
  • Experience on major Irish or UK water frameworks is a distinct advantage

Why this role? xcfaprz

This is a great fit if you’re ready to move beyond being “just another designer” and want a role where your input truly shapes outcomes:

  • Impactful work – help deliver water and wastewater infrastructure that underpins communities and environmental protection across Ireland
  • True design leadership – own the process & hydraulic discipline across multiple projects, not just a small work package
  • Variety & challenge – from early‑stage concept and optioneering to commissioning and handover
  • Career progression – strong platform to progress into Principal Engineer, Discipline Lead or Design Manager roles
  • Collaborative culture – work with planners, digital teams, project managers and site teams in a joined‑up, “one‑team” environment
  • Professional growth – support for chartership, CPD and exposure to multi‑disciplinary engineering challenges
