Role Summary
The Applications Engineer supports the design and engineering of vacuum systems and serves as a technical resource for sales reps at customer sites. This role is hands-on and customer-facing: you'll translate real-world requirements into practical system designs, create CAD drawings and BOMs, support proposals, and help troubleshoot vacuum challenges in the field. This position is well-suited to an early-career engineer with strong CAD skills who wants to grow into full ownership of standard system designs.
Key Responsibilities
Design vacuum systems and select components (pumps, blowers, valves, piping, gauges, filtration/traps, accessories, and basic controls/interfaces). Own CAD deliverables end-to-end (layouts/assemblies/details as needed) and maintain drawing standards. Create BOMs, technical submittals, and scope narratives (assumptions, inclusions/exclusions). Support basic engineering sizing and calculations (pumpdown estimates, conductance considerations, utilities checks) with guidance as needed. Partner with Purchasing and vendors on technical specs, alternates, and lead times. Support shop build/assembly with clear drawings and practical designs for safety and serviceability. Travel with sales reps to customer sites for discovery, technical presentations, and troubleshooting. Assist with commissioning/startup support and performance verification as needed. Success Measures
CAD drawings and BOMs are accurate, buildable, and require minimal rework. Faster, cleaner quoting with fewer technical unknowns and clearer scope. Strong field support: good discovery notes, practical recommendations, professional customer communication. Increasing independence on standard designs over time. Qualifications
Required
0-3 years experience in electrical or mechanical engineering, systems design, industrial equipment, or applications engineering (vacuum experience a plus, not required). Strong CAD proficiency and willingness to own drawings. Clear communication with both engineers and technicians; customer-facing professionalism. Comfortable in industrial/shop environments; hands-on mindset. Valid driver's license and ability to travel as described. Preferred
Exposure to vacuum systems/pumps or adjacent equipment (process piping, compressed air, automation, HVAC/process equipment). Familiarity with P&IDs, BOMs, basic instrumentation and controls concepts. Additional Information
