Electrical Engineering Supervisor
ROLE
The Electrical Engineering Supervisor leads the electrical and software development team with a mandate to design, sustain, and continuously improve the company’s equipment control systems and digital infrastructure.
This is a dual role: The Supervisor provides functional leadership and oversight to the department, while directly serving as a Senior Technical Lead on complex projects. The Supervisor is accountable for the reliability, code quality, and electrical safety of products, delivering clear architecture roadmaps, structured code/design reviews, and actionable follow-up across development cycles. The Supervisor provides structure, governance, and accountability to ensure that software releases, electrical schematics, and system integrations are delivered on time, within budget, and to defined performance and compliance standards. The role drives collaboration across Mechanical Engineering, R&D, Product Management, Manufacturing, and Service, ensuring the physical machine and digital ecosystem are perfectly aligned. This role reports to the Director of Engineering.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES & DELIVERABLES
Technical Leadership & Execution
- Lead the planning and execution of electrical and software deliverables through the company’s ECO process (sustaining) and NPI process (new product introduction).
- Oversee the work of the Electrical Technical Specialists and Software developers, ensuring clear objectives, architectural standards, and development timelines.
- Serve as Senior Technical Lead on strategic projects. This involves defining system architecture, selecting hardware components, managing software requirements, feasibility studies, and safety risks are identified and mitigated.
- Take ownership of system reliability by overseeing bug tracking, software version control, and electrical warranty reports. Lead root-cause analysis for field failures and drive corrective actions to enhance lifecycle performance.
- Coordinate with suppliers for electronic components, PCB fabrication, and external software consultants when required to meet launch requirements.
Product Support & System Integration
- Lead the deployment of technology. This involves overseeing the integration of software with hardware, conducting validation testing, and supporting pre-production trials.
- Capture feedback from Service and Manufacturing regarding assembly logic or user interface (UI/UX) challenges and integrate lessons learned into future software updates or electrical harness designs.
- Provide Level 3 technical support to the Service and Quality teams for complex electrical or software issues that cannot be resolved by standard troubleshooting.
- Serve as a consultant for new product development, advising on the feasibility of IoT features, automation capabilities, electrical design and compliance.
Process & Governance
- Own and enforce the Scientific Research and Experimental Development (SR&ED) process documentation for all electrical and software activities.
- Standardize development tools and methods, including Git repository management, coding standards, electrical schematic templates (e.g., IEEE/IEC), and release documentation.
- Be an expert user of the ECO process and NPI process, ensuring that software changes and electrical part substitutions are properly documented and communicated to manufacturing.
- Ensure regulatory compliance of designs (e.g., UL, CSA, CE, FCC) in collaboration with compliance specialists.
People Development & Performance
- Plan, organize, direct, and monitor the work of direct reports, aligning with departmental and corporate priorities.
- Lead recruitment, workforce planning, and structured onboarding.
- Conduct regular skills assessments and implement training plans to keep the team updated on emerging technologies (e.g., AI integration, new coding frameworks, changing electrical codes).
- Provide coaching, mentoring, and structured feedback, supporting career growth and retention.
- Manage team performance by setting clear objectives, tracking progress, conducting performance reviews, and addressing gaps through ongoing feedback and corrective action when required.
- Ensure a safe and healthy work environment by fulfilling supervisory obligations under Québec law (LSST), including identifying and correcting hazards, enforcing safe work practices, supporting ergonomic adaptations, and actively promoting compliance with Hardt’s Health & Safety policies and CNESST regulations.
- Act as a role model for Hardt’s culture and values, fostering engagement, accountability, and teamwork, and champion change initiatives by embedding new processes and tools into daily operations.
REPORTING STRUCTURE
Reports to: Director of Engineering
Direct Reports: Electrical Technical Specialist, Software Full Stack Engineer
EDUCATION, LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or software engineering (or equivalent education).
- P. Eng (OIQ) membership is highly preferred to validate electrical designs and sign off on safety-critical systems.
- Valid Class 5 (Québec) or equivalent.
- PMP certification considered an asset.
QUALIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE
- E xperience: Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in embedded systems, industrial automation, OR software development within a hardware/manufacturing environment. Experience with commercial equipment or industrial machinery is a strong asset.
- Leadership experience: Minimum of 3 years in a technical supervisory or team lead role, with a demonstrated ability to manage hybrid teams (hardware + software).
- Languages: Bilingual French and English, written and spoken required. Strong verbal and written communication skills for technical documentation.
- Skills & Competencies:
- Proven expertise in System and Electrical design process (Bloc diagram, Schematics, PCB layout, Wire Harnessing).
- Strong project management skills, with the ability to manage agile software sprints alongside waterfall hardware schedules.
- Proficiency in Microsoft 365 Suite and ERP systems.
- Ability to review electrical schematics, understand VFDs, motors, heaters, and sensors.
- Knowledge of CAD tools (e.g., Electrical CAD such as AutoCAD Electrical, SolidWorks Electrical) to review and validate designs.
- Skilled in cross-functional collaboration, acting as the bridge between \"soft\" code and \"hard\" mechanical constraints.
- Role involves a mix of office-based and hands-on work. Requires handling tools, electronic components, or prototypes, with occasional lifting of equipment or materials weighing up to 20kg.
- Regulatory & Functional Safety Compliance: Deep knowledge of electrical and software certification standards (UL 197, CSA C22.2, IEC 60335). Experience managing projects for EMC/EMI, RoHS, and functional safety controls (UL 60730, IEC 61508) regarding fail-safe design is a strong asset.
- Familiarity with relevant stacks (e.g., C, for embedded, Python, Node-Red, JavaScript/React for UI, SQL for databases) is an asset.
WORKING ARRANGEMENT & TRAVEL EXPECTATIONS
- Typical schedule: Monday to Friday, 37.5 hours per week, occasional overtime.

- Hybrid (Privilege): This role is based on a 3 full days in-office and 2 days from home schedule. The ability to work remotely is offered as a company-provided benefit to support work–life balance; however, this benefit is not guaranteed and may be modified or withdrawn at the company’s discretion based on business needs.
- Travel Requirement : 5%
