Position Overview
Yorktowne Air is seeking a detail-oriented and commercially astute Mechanical Estimator with minimum 3–5+ years of experience in commercial or industrial HVAC/mechanical construction.
You will be responsible for preparing accurate, competitive, and strategic estimates that result in awarded contracts.
Beyond takeoffs, this position requires strong judgment, risk identification, subcontractor coordination, and the ability to align estimating strategy with operational capacity and long-term client relationships.
This role offers direct exposure to leadership and the opportunity to help shape the future of Yorktowne’s retrofit estimating strategy.
This is a hybrid position, with a combination of in-office collaboration and remote flexibility based on project demands and team requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Estimating & Tendering
- Perform detailed quantity takeoffs from drawings and specifications
- Prepare complete cost estimates including labour, material, equipment, subcontractor pricing, and general conditions
- Utilize estimating software and Excel-based costing models
- Analyze incomplete drawings and apply experience-based judgment to fill scope gaps
- Develop detailed labour breakdowns aligned with union rates and project type
- Review and interpret specifications, addenda, and bid documents
- Ensure all bid requirements and submission criteria are met
- Typical project values range from $50K to $3M across retrofit, tenant fit-out, and base-building mechanical scopes.
Strategic Bid Development
- Identify bid opportunities and present them to the team
- Participate in go/no-go decision discussions
- Identify risks, exclusions, and value engineering opportunities
- Assist in developing win strategies for targeted pursuits
- Review competitor landscape and market conditions
Collaboration & Project Handoff
- Attend site visits, pre-bid meetings, and post-bid reviews
- Participate in turnover meetings with Project Managers and Operations
- Support budget development for awarded projects
- Contribute to historical cost database and lessons learned tracking
Supplier & Subcontractor Relations
- Build and maintain strong relationships with vendors and sub-trades
- Secure competitive and compliant pricing
- Evaluate subcontractor scope completeness and risk exposure
Core Qualifications & Must-Haves
We are seeking a mechanically strong, commercially disciplined estimator who brings technical expertise, sound judgment, and a high level of accountability.
Education & Experience
- Minimum 3–5+ years of Mechanical Estimating experience within commercial or industrial construction
- Post-secondary diploma or degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Construction Technology, or a related field
- Practical experience within a mechanical contracting environment, with strong exposure to HVAC systems and construction processes
- Experience organizing, preparing, and submitting detailed cost estimates and proposals
Technical Competencies
- Proven ability to prepare accurate, comprehensive cost estimates including labour, material, equipment, and subcontractor pricing
- Strong understanding of mechanical specifications, construction methodologies, and industry standards
- Ability to interpret construction drawings, specifications, contracts, and associated documentation with precision
- Working knowledge of cost coding systems and work breakdown structures
- Strong mathematical aptitude with accurate quantity take-offs and cost extensions
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, Teams, PowerPoint)
- Experience with computerized estimating systems (e.g., AutoBid Mechanical or similar platforms)
- Exposure to plumbing estimating is considered an asset, as Yorktowne continues to expand into full-scope mechanical services.
- Experience with Field Boss is considered an asset.
