Intern, Data Analyst (Finance)

This is a full-time summer internship that takes place from May 11, 2026 to August 28, 2026.

Job Summary 

The Intern, Data Analyst (Finance) will work directly under the supervision of the Principal Economist, contributing to high-impact economic analysis that informs senior leadership decisions. The intern will streamline CN's data collection processes, develop evaluation metrics (e.g., month-over-month and year-over-year changes), and build interactive dashboards in Power BI that visualize key performance indicators. These dashboards will be used in presentations to the CEO, Senior Vice Presidents, and Vice Presidents, ensuring that leadership has timely, data-driven insights to guide strategic planning.

Major Responsibilities

  • Document existing data sources and ingestion processes
  • Streamline and automate economic data collection
  • Develop evaluation metrics and analytical frameworks
  • Design executive-facing dashboards in Power BI

Requirements

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Proficiency in data analysis tools such as Python or R
  • Experienced in analyzing and managing both structured and unstructured data
  • Experience with data visualization tools such as Tableau, Power BI, or similar platform
  • Strong understanding of financial concepts such as financial analysis, Net Present Value (NPV), Return on Investment (ROI), Internal Rate of Return (IRR) and financial trends
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team and communicate complex ideas clearly
  • Highly organized with a keen attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to work independently, take initiative, and meet deadlines
  • Ability to manage multiple efforts simultaneously and strong project management skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skill
  • Experience with Excel, including advanced functions and financial modelling*
  • Interest in financial markets and investment strategies*

Education

  • Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's or Master's program in Finance, Data Science, Economics, Computer Science, or a related field
  • Coursework or practical experience in financial analysis, machine learning, statistical modelling, or data analytics*
  • Previous internship experience in Finance, Data Science, or a related field*

*Any experience/education/skills/knowledge for these above would be considered as an asset
