Summary
The Test Lab Manager is responsible for leading all technical, testing, and compliance functions within our LED lighting manufacturing operations. This role oversees the development, operation, and continuous improvement of the in‑house test laboratory, ensuring all lighting products meet or exceed performance, safety, and regulatory standards. This position will collaborate closely with engineering, product development, and quality teams to support innovation, validate product performance, and ensure compliance with applicable industry certifications.
Responsibilities
Establish, develop, and manage the company's lighting test laboratory, ensuring it is fully equipped and optimized for accurate, reliable testing.
Oversee the testing of lighting fixtures for heat, light output, efficacy, and electrical performance.
Utilize and maintain sophisticated laboratory equipment, including: goniophotometer, oscilloscope, thermal imaging tools, and photometric & electrical measurement devices
Ensure proper calibration, documentation, and maintenance of all test instruments and equipment.
Develop and enforce laboratory safety protocols and testing procedures.
Lead technical evaluations of new and existing lighting products to verify performance specs and identify opportunities for improvement.
Analyze test data, prepare reports, and communicate findings to engineering, product management, and executive leadership.
Work with cross‑functional teams to resolve technical issues related to product performance, reliability, or certification.
Ensure all products comply with relevant standards from regulatory and certification bodies, including CSA, ETL, and UL.
Maintain accurate documentation for audits, inspections, and certification renewal
Manage certification processes and serve as the primary liaison with external standards associations and testing agencies.
Monitor changes to relevant industry standards and update internal processes accordingly.
Supervise laboratory technicians, providing coaching, training, and performance management.
Support the organization in strategic technology planning and investment decisions
Collaborate with R&D, engineering, and quality assurance teams to support product development and continuous improvement initiatives.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or related field; advanced degree an asset.
5+ years of experience in LED lighting, electronics, photometry, or a related technical environment.
Hands-on experience with laboratory testing equipment such as goniophotometers, oscilloscopes, and thermal testing devices.
Strong knowledge of lighting industry standards and certification processes (CSA, ETL, UL).
Excellent analytical, organizational, and leadership skills.
Ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly to both technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
Strong leadership skills and communication skills – managing a small team
