Working with Journeyman Tradesman under the direction of the Maintenance Mechanical Supervisor, the apprentice will troubleshoot, repair, rebuild and maintain equipment within the manufacturing environment with a focus on safety, quality, effectiveness, efficiency, and plant improvement.

This position is a 12-hour rotation shift position (2 days, 2 nights, 4 off) located in our Portage la Prairie, MB location

What You'll Do:

  • Assisting with machine installation and dismantling: Helping to disassemble existing machinery, prepare foundations, and install new components as directed by a journeyman millwright. 
  • Learning to read blueprints and schematics: Interpreting technical drawings to understand the layout and function of machinery. 
  • Basic maintenance tasks: Performing cleaning, lubrication, and minor adjustments on industrial equipment. 
  • Operating hand and power tools: Learning to safely use a variety of tools like wrenches, drills, grinders, and specialized machinery related to the trade. 
  • Material handling: Moving heavy machinery parts and materials around the worksite. 
  • Safety compliance: Following all safety procedures and reporting any hazards to supervisors. 
  • Learning about mechanical systems: Gaining knowledge of hydraulics, pneumatics, and basic electrical systems as they relate to industrial machinery. 
  • Keeping work areas clean and organized: Maintaining a safe and efficient work environment. 
  • On-the-job training: Actively learning from a journeyman millwright through observation and hands-on experience. 
  • Skills and qualities needed for a millwright apprentice:
  • Mechanical aptitude: A strong understanding of basic mechanical principles and how machinery works. 
  • Physical strength and endurance: Ability to lift heavy objects and work in physically demanding positions. 
  • Attention to detail: Precisely following instructions and ensuring proper alignment of machinery components. 
  • Problem-solving skills: Identifying and troubleshooting mechanical issues 
  • Teamwork: Collaborating effectively with other millwrights and construction crews 
  • Willingness to learn: Being eager to acquire new skills and knowledge through training and on-the-job

  • Understand and respect the rules concerning safety, quality, hygiene and the environment.
  • Maintain confidentiality in all matters pertaining to the Roquette Pea processing plant and its operations.
  • Person needs to be supervised by a certified Millwright Journeyman when executing any trade related activity.
  • Participate in continuous improvement programs.

What You'll Need:

  • Registered with Apprenticeship Manitoba as a Millwright Apprentice (minimum of 1 year of schooling
  • completed). Must hold a valid class 5 driver's license.
  • Requires a minimum of 2–3 years of hands‑on maintenance experience within an industrial or manufacturing environment.

Functional Competencies:

  • Good understanding of the process and daily routines.
  • Excellent communication skills and open to feedback.
  • Team orientated and well organized.
  • Ability to effectively assist with troubleshoot and problem solve.
  • Aptitude to support planning and scheduling.
  • Works in a responsible and safe manner, follows proper lockout and safety procedures.
  • Good understanding of regulatory requirements.
  • Ability to gain good operational knowledge of production processes at Roquette.
  • Technical Applicative Competencies:
  • Basic knowledge in Microsoft software tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Project).
  • SAP knowledge (work orders portfolio management).
  • Aptitude for administration and documentation control.
  • Working knowledge of measuring instruments to verify dimensional characteristics.
  • Able to read diagrams, sketches, instructions, and drawings for the purpose of determining parts lists and equipment repair.
  • Basic knowledge with precision bearings, setup gauging tools, tool mounting systems, and lubricant systems.
  • Support the journeyman in charge to analyze weekly schedule and balance between planned maintenance jobs and new jobs (give it the appropriate scheduling priority: PM compliance).
