AltaGas - Senior Electrical Engineer
- Calgary, Alberta, Canada
- Calgary, Alberta, Canada
About
AltaGas is seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer to serve as a SME across our Midstream capital projects and assets. In this role you will provide subject matter expertise across large capital initiatives, facility expansions, and operational engineering support.
You won't just review and critique designs — you'll shape them and how we work. This role is about making sound, practical decisions that balance safety, reliability, cost, and operability across a diverse asset base spanning midstream processing, storage, and export facilities.
With continued growth and expansion across the portfolio, this role offers the opportunity to strengthen electrical standards, governance, and execution practices at scale. In a lean and fast-moving team, priorities can shift quickly, and success requires responsiveness, sound judgment, and a solutions-oriented mindset that balances technical rigor with practical execution.
How You Might Spend Your Days
Supporting major capital projects (including large-scale expansions) by reviewing and approving electrical deliverables from EPC and engineering partners
Providing hands-on troubleshooting support to operating facilities when electrical issues arise — partnering directly with Operations and Maintenance teams
Participating in design reviews, HAZOPs, constructibility and operability assessments to ensure safe, compliant, and practical solutions
Reviewing and contributing to electrical drawings and calculations (single lines, area classification, cable schedules, load studies, etc.)
Supporting RFQs, technical bid evaluations, and vendor document reviews to ensure technical integrity and value
Walking down field installations, supporting commissioning and PSSR activities, and reviewing redlines and QA/QC packages
Leading or supporting Management of Change (MOC) activities to maintain compliance and operational integrity
Developing and maintaining electrical specifications, standards, and governance within AltaGas' Operational Management System
Liaising with utilities, regulators, and external stakeholders as required
Sharing lessons learned and helping drive continuous improvement across assets and projects
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent technical education
8+ years of progressive electrical engineering experience in industrial environments (midstream, oil & gas, energy, petrochemical or similar)
Ability to travel (5-10%) to attend site visits in Canada and the USA
Attributes
Self-directed and comfortable operating with autonomy and accountability
Calm, steady, and solutions-oriented in fast-moving or ambiguous environments
Focused on closing gaps and driving practical, executable outcomes — not just identifying issues
Comfortable toggling between strategic standards work and urgent field support
Technical Experience
Strong capital project experience, ideally within an EPC or major project delivery environment
Experience supporting brownfield expansions and operating facilities
Exposure to commissioning, field execution, and Management of Change processes
Demonstrated ability to review and approve third-party engineering deliverables
Deep knowledge of Canadian Electrical Code, Safety Codes, and regulatory compliance (Alberta required; BC an asset)
Experience with hazardous area classification and industrial power distribution systems
Why AltaGas
Meaningful technical influence across both capital projects and operating assets
Exposure to large-scale expansion projects with real operational impact
Opportunity to shape and strengthen electrical standards and governance across the organization
A lean, collaborative team environment where expertise is valued and trusted
This role offers the chance to operate as a true technical leader — not buried in theory, but embedded where engineering decisions directly affect safety, performance, and growth.
