Assistant News Editor – Video-Audio Full-Time Location: Toronto The Canadian Press is seeking a dynamic and creative assistant editor who wants to bring their talents and ideas to The Canadian Press team, ensuring the company continues to provide a valued service to its current and future video and audio clients. The ideal candidate has strong news judgment and has a proven ability to create compelling news stories. They should have a curiosity about how CP can push our video product forward and streamline our audio and video workflows. This person will work closely with the Supervising Editor of Video and Audio on daily operations, longer-term projects and the launch of new products. Responsibilities Identify stories that could have a video or audio component and see them through from ideation to creation Work with bureaus to ensure video and audio is delivered on a timely basis Work with reporters to provide back-up on major news events to ensure audio is provided to clients as quickly as possible Edit audio products, including newscasts, reports and stories Work with the Supervising Editor of Video and Audio to push forward our video offering, including experimenting with live video and having a keen interest in the place of digital video in the current media landscape Attend editorial planning meetings Train staff across the country on the use of video and audio-related tools and workflows Troubleshoots audio and video technical issues Assists in hiring and training new staff Required Skills and Qualifications Post secondary education and 3-5 years of relevant job experience using video and audio in storytelling Familiarity with major audio and video technologies and software as well as digital tools Ability to do voice reports and audio recordings. Ability to produce video news content Experience in a fast-paced daily newsroom environment. Detail-oriented, with the ability to organize time and workflow. Familiarity with CP Stylebook and Caps and Spelling Excellent verbal and written communication skills Ability to edit and improve colleagues’ work on short notice Excellent news judgment
