The Municipality of Chatham-Kent has an opening for 4 (four) Geographic Information System (GIS) summer students in the Asset & Quality Management Division. This student opportunity is for a period from May 1, 2026, to August 31, 2026.
Job description
The GIS Student will support the work of the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) team in the municipality; will utilize advanced tools in our Enterprise ArcGIS environment to perform cartographic, analytical, editing, and administrative GIS work. The student must have strong customer service skills and an interest in local government, as they will be assisting multiple departments with data analytics and reporting requirements.
Essential responsibilities
- Demonstrate Chatham-Kent's core values and competencies
- Respond to client requests regarding the use of GIS technology
- Consult with business experts to document requirements and metadata for GIS data
- Use GIS editing tools to create and maintain municipal spatial and attribute data
- Liaise with internal and external users and stakeholders to conduct GIS analysis and create maps and online applications
- Collect spatial and attribute information for assets throughout the municipality, possibly using GPS data collection equipment
- Work both indoors and outdoors
Essential qualifications
- Currently be enrolled in a community college diploma (or certificate) or university degree program in a GIS related program
- Demonstrated competency in expressing information through analysis and mapping to individuals or groups taking into account the audience and the nature of the information
- Knowledge of principles and practices of GIS, databases and cartography
- Ability to work independently
- Strong knowledge of Esri ArcGIS Pro application
Strong computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, email and internet (or other similar software programs)
Certifications, memberships, licenses
- Esri ArcGIS Certifications are an asset
Work environment/hours of work
- This position works both indoors and outdoors
- This position works weekday hours
This position works onsite at the Civic Centre in Chatham
Driver's license/vehicle requirements:
Because of the responsibilities, this position requires the successful candidate to have a valid class G (or higher) Ontario driver's license; a driver's abstract will be conducted by the Municipality of Chatham-Kent. An acceptable driver's abstract will: be an original document and current (within the previous thirty (30) days); have no more than four (4) demerit points; have no more than two (2) convictions for the same offence; have no criminal code convictions; have no 'non-medical or administrative' license suspension in the preceding three (3) years.
Background check requirements
Because of the environment this position will be working in, the successful candidate will be required to furnish an original Police Information Search (criminal reference check) prior to commencement of employment.
Essential physical and/or safety requirements
- Sitting: constant sitting in a chair (always at desk, meeting room; some driving to and from other municipal buildings)
- Standing: infrequent standing inside, outside (possibility exists for GPS work - that would include walking and standing)
- Hands: constant mousing
- Walking: Ability to walk long distances over varied terrain
- Comfortable working outdoors in diverse weather conditions
Benefits
This student position has an hourly range of $19.06 to $21.12 and will receive vacation and statutory benefits in accordance with Employment Standards Act.
