About
We are developing a compact cordless ratchet tool with an integrated rotating multi-socket turret mechanism inside the head. The turret replaces traditional removable sockets and allows the user to rotate between multiple fixed socket sizes without removing components. This is a new mechanical architecture intended for automotive tool applications. We are seeking a mechanical design engineer to develop the turret mechanism to CAD-ready, manufacturable stage.
Project Scope:
Design a compact rotating socket turret mechanism that:
Fits inside a maximum outer head diameter of 60 mm (target ≤ 58 mm preferred)
Houses 5 integrated sockets (initial sizes: 8mm, 10mm, 12mm, 13mm, 14mm)
Allows manual indexed rotation between socket positions
Locks securely in each position
Withstands torque loads of 40–45 Nm
Maintains compact axial depth
This phase is for mechanical validation only (no motor, battery, or electronics).
Key Engineering Constraints
Outer diameter 60 mm (primary constraint)
3/8" drive interface
Thin-wall 6-point socket geometry
Indexed rotation with positive locking mechanism
Minimal backlash
Manufacturable with CNC or production tooling
Deliverables:
Phase 1 – Concept Development
Mechanism architecture proposal
Locking mechanism concept options
Risk analysis (size, torque, wear, tolerance)
Phase 2 – CAD Development
Full 3D CAD assembly
Exploded view
Cross-sectional view
Tolerance stack analysis
Material recommendations
Phase 3 – Prototype-Ready Files
STEP files
Manufacturing drawings
Suggested machining approach
Notes for future injection molding housing integration
Optional:
DFM suggestions
Cost-reduction recommendations
Preferred Experience:
Mechanical product development
Precision mechanisms (rotary indexing, locking systems)
Power tool design experience (strong plus)
Gearbox / torque transmission experience
Experience designing for torque loads 40 Nm
Experience with compact assemblies
Technical Skills:
SolidWorks / Fusion 360 / Inventor / similar
Tolerance stack analysis
Mechanical stress awareness
Understanding of socket geometry and tool steel considerations
Timeline:
Target timeline:
4–8 weeks depending on scope and iterations
Budget:
Flexible depending on experience and scope.
We are prioritizing quality and feasibility over lowest cost.
Long-Term Opportunity
This is Phase 1 of a product roadmap.
Successful collaboration may lead to:
Full ratchet head integration
Future tool variants
Long-term product development relationship
Application Requirements
Please provide:
Portfolio of mechanical products developed
Examples of compact mechanical assemblies
Experience with torque-bearing components
Confirmation you can design within strict diameter constraint
Estimated timeline for concept + CAD completion
