Work Arrangement:  This role is eligible for hybrid work. This means you'll have the flexibility of working from home and in the office (from Regina or Saskatoon) on a scheduled rotation.   

General Accountability

Counsel is responsible for providing legal opinions for various corporate-related matters and prepares, reviews, and vets corporate contracts and agreements of moderate to high complexity for SGI and its regional operations. The role also involves direct relationships with the business areas of the corporation.

Key Accountabilities

Legal Expertise & Advisory Services  

  • Responsible for the preparation, review, and vetting of any contracts entered into between the corporation and its external partners. 

  • Provides legal advice to the corporation, including in the areas of legislative interpretation, regulatory compliance, contractual issues, procurement, privacy, IT/SaaS, intellectual property, corporate risk, and/or mitigation strategies, depending on portfolio. 

  • Provides legal advice to the corporation in a manner that acknowledges the practicalities, strategies, and objectives of the target business area and accounts for the enterprise-wide risk policy. 

  • As directed, conducts legal research on all issues affecting the corporation and prepares legal opinions.  

  • Maintains an in-depth knowledge of insurance law and stays current with legal decisions, precedents, and industry trends and practices that impact the corporation's lines of business. 

  • Manages a file load commensurate with years of practice, experience, and legal expertise.  

  • Oversees external counsel retained by SGI as requested to ensure adherence to reporting and billing standards and to the corporation's risk tolerance.  

Communication & Development & Mentorship  

  • Provides regular oral and/or written reporting to senior members of the Legal Division, corporate committees, and business areas as requested. 

  • Provides guidance and training to the business and within the Legal Division (e.g., presentations/seminars on best practices, developments in the law, and emerging risks areas). 

  • Acts as a mentor to members of the Legal Division, helping them enhance their skills and deepen their knowledge in specialized areas. 

Collaboration & Operational Support  

  • Collaborates across the Legal Division, business areas, and other stakeholders to resolve issues effectively and efficiently and to achieve results for the corporation, with an SGI-first mindset. 

  • Supports the review, development and/or implementation of programs, policies, procedures and solutions to ensure legal compliance and risk mitigation and support business and corporate priorities. 

  • Contributes to projects, initiatives, and committees within and outside of the Legal Division as requested. 

  • Proactively supports collaboration opportunities within the Legal Division to grow its expertise. 

Leadership  

  • Actively contributes to and supports the culture of a high performing workforce. 

  • Participates in divisional succession plans, ensuring ongoing professional and career development and supports development in others. 

  • Supports a culture of leadership and accountability to effectively deliver strategic and corporate strategies.

Corporate Management  

  • Enables the success of programs and policies that are aligned with corporate, strategic, and divisional strategies.   

  • Manages risk in area of authority. 

  • Ensures that the Health, Safety, and Emergency Management Policy is applied in area of responsibility.  

Education 

  • A Law Degree from an accredited post-secondary education institution. 

  • Called to the Bar in the applicable jurisdiction. 

  • Member in good standing of the Law Society of Saskatchewan. 

Experience 

Experience in the general practice of law with a focus on corporate insurance law. At minimum, candidates must have successfully completed articles and be a member of the Law Society of Saskatchewan. Pay band and compensation will be aligned to knowledge and years of relevant experience. 

Compensation Overview 

M7 Payband  
Seniority/Experience : 1 - 3 years call to bar, junior-level 
Pay Range:  $90,116 - $120,147  

M9 Payband  
Seniority/Experience :  4 - 10 years call to bar, mid-level 
Pay Range:  $109,052 - $145,411 
 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities 

  • Knowledge of substantive and procedural laws. 

  • Knowledge of legislation and regulations in the applicable jurisdiction that directly or indirectly impact the corporation's core business (e.g., The Automobile Accident Insurance Act, The Insurance Act, The Traffic Safety Act, and privacy legislation, etc.).  

  • Knowledge of insurance practices, including best practices and legal implications that impact on the corporation's lines of business. 

  • Knowledge of corporate/commercial and procurement legislation that directly or indirectly impacts SGI's business operations.  

  • Skilled in verbal and written communication with the ability to present complex legal issues with clarity to key stakeholders and all levels of management in all business and functional areas.   

  • Ability to demonstrate strong analytical and problem-solving skills to identify barriers, simplify complex issues, communicate clearly, and implement effective solutions. 

  • Ability to identify key issues and provide an independent view to management in a clear and practical manner.  

  • Ability to adapt to changing and/or ambiguous priorities, initiatives, or requirements, prioritize and organize work while balancing multiple demands and deadlines.  

Working Conditions 

Physical Effort:  This job involves travel, mostly driving within the province but some out of province travel may be required (20%). 
Physical Environment:  Normal office environment. 
Sensory Attention:  Normal office environment. 
Mental Stress:  This job encounters mental stress caused by difficult customers, confrontation, unexpected and unplanned work assignments, unexpected travel and numerous deadlines (~50%).
