ISL's Edmonton Community Development Survey Team works on a diverse range of Transportation, Municipal, Community Development and Landscape projects with cross functional teams to deliver excellence for our clients. A Little About You
Your cover letter must demonstrate:
- Your ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

Your resume must display:
- Diploma or Degree related to: Geomatics Engineering, Civil Engineering, or Civil Design and Drafting Technology (or a related field). Holders of a CST designation with equivalent experience will be considered.
- A strong foundation in surveying principles is essential. Minimum 3-5 years of relevant surveying experience in civil, municipal, or land development projects (greater experience is an asset).
- Hands-on experience with surveying equipment (GPS receivers, total stations, levels) and associated software.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D for processing survey data and producing drawings.
- Advanced user of Trimble Access and familiarity with Trimble Business Center for field data collection and survey data management.
- Strong computer skills including standard office software for reporting and communication.
- Excellent attention to detail and a methodical approach to ensure accuracy in all survey measurements and documents. Strong organizational and time-management skills to juggle multiple projects and deadlines.
- Effective communication and leadership abilities – capable of working independently and collaboratively, mentoring junior staff, and interfacing professionally with clients, contractors, and multidisciplinary project teams.
- A commitment to safety and quality on job sites.
- Must hold a valid Class 5 Alberta driver's license (or equivalent) and be willing to travel to project sites within central Alberta (company vehicle provided).
Bonus points for:
- Design and drafting experience.
- Aerial drone, laser scanner, and/or bathymetric survey experience.
- Construction inspection experience.
- Legal survey experience.
- Pix4D point cloud processing experience. Familiarity with Lidar/laser scanning techniques and equipment.
A Little More About the Role
This role is based in Edmonton and will require travel within Central Alberta. The successful applicant will be working on active construction sites and will need to be prepared for varying weather conditions. Increased working hours during the construction season are to be expected.
While no two days are ever the same, what you can expect to be doing in the role is:
- Technical Survey Execution: Oversee and perform field survey activities as needed – including preliminary/topographic surveys, construction layout, and as-built surveys for subdivision and community infrastructure projects. Ensure proper survey control setup, calibration, and maintenance of all survey equipment.
- Survey Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC): Assist with creating QA/QC processes for all survey work. Assist with developing and enforcing survey workflows, best practices, and documentation standards to ensure accuracy and consistency in deliverables.
- Project Support & Coordination: Provide high-level support to project administrators and project managers on major land and community development projects (including large-scale municipal and land development initiatives). Assist in scoping projects and defining survey requirements in collaboration with project managers and other stakeholders. Coordinate survey scopes and ensure alignment with project goals.
- Mentorship & Team Leadership: Mentor and guide field survey crews, fostering skill development and ensuring sound surveying practices. Support future crew leads through comprehensive training and knowledge transfer to build leadership capacity within the team.
- Site Audits & Compliance: Conduct regular site audits to evaluate contractor performance, identify survey discrepancies or construction deficiencies, verify survey accuracy and safety compliance, and ensure that field work adheres to project specifications and industry standards. Clearly document and report audit findings to project administrators and crew leads, helping drive corrective actions.
- Equipment & Resource Management: Manage survey equipment and materials. Ensure total stations, GPS units, levels, and other surveying instruments are properly calibrated and maintained. Confirm that necessary supplies – lath, hubs, paint, stakes, and other survey equipment – are stocked and available for projects.
- Field Coordination: Attend and actively contribute to field coordination meetings (organized by Project Administrators), providing updates on survey progress, addressing any survey-related issues, and aligning field activities with overall project schedules.
- Technical Support & Troubleshooting: Act as a go-to technical resource for field surveyors. Handle troubleshooting calls and questions from field teams, providing guidance to resolve on-site challenges; collaborate with or escalate issues to Project Administrators when additional support is required.
- Proposal Support and Estimating: Prepare detailed survey estimates and quotations for project proposals and scoping efforts. Work with project managers to define survey effort, timelines, and resources needed for new projects or change orders, ensuring proposals and scopes are accurate and comprehensive.
- Continuous Improvement & Industry Knowledge: Stay up-to-date with market trends, emerging technologies, and evolving best practices in surveying and geomatics. Drive innovation by incorporating new techniques (e.g., UAV/drone surveying, 3D scanning and point clouds, improved data processing methods) and promote ongoing training and knowledge transfer within the survey team to maintain a cutting-edge practice.
- Certification and Close-Out Management: Assist with the tracking and completion of project close-out requirements. Assist with maintaining the Construction Completion Certificate (CCC) and Final Acceptance Certificate (FAC) tracking lists, and ensure all necessary documentation is prepared and submitted on time to facilitate project handover and closure.
