Title: Environmental Specialist
Reports To: Sr Manager IMS & Quality Engineering
Location: 24 Napoleon Road, Barrie
Job Purpose: The Environmental Specialist (Individual Contributor – No Direct Reports) will be the lead for the organization regarding compliance with the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System. The individual will lead Environmental Compliance Programs while driving alignment with corporate Environmental Sustainability Goals (ESG), sustainability initiatives, and regulatory reporting obligations. The role exercises independent professional judgment in environmental compliance, risk identification, and regulatory reporting. The associate will collaborate with various stakeholders across the organization including Operations, Supply Chain Management, Product Development / Compliance and Finance to generate data collection, complete analysis, and reporting as it pertains to environmental and sustainability initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
Environmental Management System (ISO Leadership & Governance
Serve as the organizational lead for the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System (EMS), ensuring effective implementation, maintenance, and continual improvement.
Maintain EMS documentation, including procedures, records, environmental aspects and impacts, and legal/compliance registers.
Support Management Review by preparing performance data, risk summaries, and improvement recommendations.
Ensure alignment of the EMS with the Integrated Management System (IMS), including coordination with ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 requirements.
ESG – actively participate in the company' s ESG steering committee as advisory role and helps identify compliance requirements in respect to ISO 14001 regulation and / or other initiatives as identified by the committee.
Actively leads the company's associate sustainability group; Napoleon Sustainability Champions, actively promotes the group, and provides guidance and support for its vision and initiatives to build an initiative-taking sustainability culture and engagement.
Environmental Risk Identification, Aspects & Impacts Management
Lead the identification, evaluation, and periodic review of environmental aspects, impacts, risks, and opportunities in accordance with ISO 14001 and internal procedures.
Ensures the method and procedure (SOP 1.4) for the Identification and Evaluation of Environmental Aspects and their risks are completed and updated as required. Ensure organizational Risk and opportunities related to environmental aspects are defined in the Process Aspect Chart (ISO-1144), and communicated by utilizing the EHS Communication, Participation, and Consultation procedure (SOP 1.11).
Maintain and update the Environmental Aspects and Impacts Register and related risk documentation. Utilizes the Environmental Compliance Requirements (ISO-1210) & the Environmental Aspects and Impacts Record report (ISO-1144) to identify needs.
Ensure environmental risks and controls are clearly communicated across the organization using established EHS communication and consultation processes.
Participate in environmental risk reviews related to operational changes, capital projects, new materials, equipment, or processes.
Regulatory, ESG & Environmental Reporting
Coordinate, compile, validate, and submit accurate environmental data and reports to applicable agencies and regulatory bodies, including but not limited to:
National Pollutant Release Inventory (NPRI) to the Ministry of Environment (MOE)
Industrial Consumption of Energy survey to Stats Canada
Energy and Water (EWRB) data collection to the Ministry of Energy
Halocarbon Refrigeration Release to Environmental and Climate Change Canada (ECCC)
Environmental Compliance Approval (ECA) to Stats Canada
Environmental Protection Expenditure Survey to Stats Canada
Federal Plastics Registry (FPR) to ECCC
Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) to ECCC
Refractory Ceramic Fiber (RCF) to ECCC
Resource Productivity & Recovery Authority (RPRA) to Stewardship Ontario
Monitor changes to environmental legislation, reporting obligations, and ESG disclosure requirements, ensuring timely updates to reporting practices.
Support ESG data collection and analysis for corporate sustainability initiatives and performance disclosures.
Ensure environmental data governance, accuracy, traceability, and audit readiness for internal, regulatory, or third party reviews.
Any additional report(s) as per regulatory/compliance requirements are identified/updated.
Waste, Hazardous Materials & Circularity Programs
Coordinate hazardous waste management and disposal activities, including contractor oversight, documentation, transportation compliance, and regulatory reporting working with purchasing and operations leadership reporting to Transport Canada.
Coordinate activities related to waste audits, waste reduction initiatives, and diversion programs aligned with corporate sustainability goals.
Partner with Operations, Supply Chain, and Engineering to identify opportunities for waste minimization, material efficiency, and improved environmental performance.
Supply Chain & Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) Support
Collaborate with Supply Chain Management to support environmental compliance and reporting requirements related to EPR, packaging, plastics, and recyclables.
Assist in communicating environmental requirements to internal stakeholders and, where applicable, suppliers.
Analyze EPR and stewardship data to support continuous improvement opportunities across products and packaging.
Environmental Training, Awareness & Culture Development
Develop and support environmental awareness, compliance, and EMS training programs for employees and relevant stakeholders.
Promote environmental responsibility and sustainability culture across operations and support functions.
Maintain training and competency records related to ISO 14001 and environmental regulatory requirements.
Auditing, Assurance & Continuous Improvement
Plan, coordinate, and conduct internal audits for ISO 14001, ISO 9001, and ISO 45001 in accordance with established audit programs.
Support external certification audits, regulatory inspections, and follow-up corrective action.
Participate in environmental incident investigations and corrective/preventive action activities to drive systemic improvement.
Additional Integrated EHS & IMS Support
Support additional EHS and IMS initiatives as required, including cross functional projects, data analysis, and continuous improvement activities.
Act as a subject matter resource on environmental compliance, sustainability initiatives, and management system requirements.
Education & Experience
Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Sustainability, or a related technical discipline; or an Environmental diploma with demonstrated progressive experience in environmental compliance, manufacturing operations, and management systems. Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.
Minimum 5 years of progressive experience in an environmental compliance or sustainability role within a manufacturing or industrial environment, with direct accountability for regulatory reporting and agency interaction (provincial and/or federal).
Minimum 3 years of internal auditing experience related to ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems. Preferred 10+ years of experience supporting ISO 14001 systems across multiple departments or sites, demonstrating sustained compliance, audit readiness, and continuous improvement.
Environmental Professional (EP) or equivalent technical designation (C.Tech, C.E.T.) preferred.
ISO 14001 Lead Auditor or Integrated Management Systems Auditor (ISO 9001 / 14001 / 45001)
GRI Standards or ESG/Sustainability Reporting certification
ISO 31000 Risk Management or equivalent risk based certification
Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM), where applicable
Sustainability or environmental data management certifications considered an asset
Strong understanding of provincial / federal legislation and environmental framework; valid driver's license in good standing.
Excellent computer skills using Microsoft Office applications (Word/Excel/PowerPoint/Project). Experience preparing data for third party assurance or audits.
EPR systems and/or Microsoft F&O.
