Location - This role is in-person at North Campus Edmonton.
The Li Ka Shing Applied Virology (LKSAV) Group is a collaborative research environment designed to translate and commercialize basic research discoveries. There are ±30 staff from varied disciplines (virologists, chemists, immunologists, computational scientists, GMP manufacturers, consultants, etc.) working in the Li Ka Shing Applied Virology Group with more than 6 active projects under development and targeted for future clinical testing. In addition, the group actively collaborates with about 12 Principal Investigators from the department of Medical Microbiology & Immunology as well as other University of Alberta departments. It also has active collaborations with several Principal Investigators at other
Canadian & international organizations.
The position will primarily support the supervisor's research program focused on developing novel drugs against viral-induced lymphomas.
Under the direction and guidance of the supervisor, the applicant will assist in developing biochemical and cell-based assays relevant to these diseases, as well as contribute to the establishment of appropriate animal models. The position also involves working with a senior Research Associate who provides computational modeling and drug screening.
Responsibilities
Conducts research activities aimed at identifying and developing new drug candidates for viral-induced lymphomas.
Works closely with the PI and the Computational Modeler to design and execute experiments; collects and analyzes data, prepares detailed reports, and presents findings during regular meetings with the PI and the AVI team.
Assists in drafting research manuscripts and contributes to the development of grant applications and contract proposals, with input and direction from the PI.
Develops specific experimental protocols and data collection plans as assigned, in alignment with research priorities established by the PI.
Supports the supervision and guidance of technical staff and students working on projects related to the target diseases, ensuring lab activities are consistent with the PI's scientific direction
Work with the lab manager for the maintenance and efficient operation of the lab (e.g., specialized lab equipment maintenance and calibration). As well as ordering of reagents and other supplies for the lab. Advise on specialized technical procedures or equipment.
Qualifications
MSc degree is required in Biomedical Engineering
8+ years of extensive specialized experience in a research environment
Strong background in molecular biology, immunology, molecular determinants of disease, virology
Excellent organizational, analytical and communication skills
Ability to work independently with other team members and to prioritize tasks
