Environmental Impairment Liability Underwriting Manager

Role Highlights

  • Location: Canada
  • This brand-new role offers the opportunity to lead and accelerate the growth of QBE's Environmental Impairment Liability (EIL) portfolio in Canada, leveraging your deep market expertise and broker relationships to build a niche, high‑potential book of business.

The Opportunity:

We are excited to introduce a brand‑new opportunity within our growing Environmental Impairment Liability (EIL) portfolio in Canada - a specialised and rapidly expanding product line within QBE Canada. As the EIL book continues to gain momentum, we are seeking a seasoned expert with deep market knowledge and strong broker relationships to help shape, grow, and elevate our presence in this niche space. You will play a pivotal role in developing this portfolio, bringing your experience to build market confidence, drive new business, and establish QBE as a leading partner in the Canadian EIL market. This role offers a unique opportunity to make a significant impact from day one.

About QBE

At QBE, we get to the heart of what matters for our customers. And we do it all with a human touch.

We're an international insurer with more than 13,000 people working across 26 countries – which means we're big enough for your ambitions, yet small enough for you to make a real impact. It's an exciting time. We're building momentum towards our vision to become the most consistent and innovative risk partner.

What if you could have a positive impact – at work and in the world? As part of the QBE team, you'll get to spend every day working with people who are passionate, talented and kind.

Your New Role:

  • Underwrite insurance risks in alignment with the Business Plan and personal authority to achieve business objectives.
  • Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with stakeholders, including customers, brokers, and colleagues, to maximize influence and support business goals.
  • Develop strategic relationships in line with the Business Plan to facilitate the achievement of objectives.
  • Ensure compliance with insurance strategy to mitigate risk and achieve business plan targets.
  • Participate actively in shaping and developing strategy, knowledge, and best practices within the team.
  • Promote the department, division, and company brand positively to leverage brand equity effectively.
  • Ensure adherence to all legal and regulatory requirements to meet obligations.
  • Maintain underwriting standards, instructions, and best practices to minimise risk and enhance efficiency.
  • Stay updated on market dynamics and demonstrate market cycle awareness to operate effectively.
  • Motivate and develop the team by demonstrating good leadership behaviours and management best practice to support the achievement of business goals.

About you:

  • Significant Casualty underwriting experience, ideally with international exposure, and a strong understanding of Environmental Impairment Liability (EIL) risks.
  • Deep commercial acumen with the ability to assess key profit drivers, make sound underwriting decisions, and contribute to long‑term portfolio growth.
  • Strong market knowledge with established broker relationships and a proven ability to build networks within niche specialty lines.
  • Excellent organisational, prioritisation, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to manage complex environmental and long‑tail risk portfolios.
  • Skilled negotiator with an innovative approach to underwriting and program design, particularly within emerging or developing product lines.
  • Experience in building or scaling an EIL book of business is preferred but not essential; however, the ability to apply past learnings to support growth in a developing market is key.
