Our growing company is looking for a motivated Industrial Controls Design Engineer with a
minimum of 3 years' experience to be part of the Company Engineering team. This role will best suit
and preference will be given to an individual with Instrumentation, Process Controls Engineering,
Mechanical Engineering or Controls Engineering credentials with previous experience in the
Industrial vertical. The suitable candidate will have proven design knowledge and is looking to learn
and grow.
Reporting to the Design Engineering Manager, the Industrial Controls Design Engineer works closely
with other design team members and more senior engineers and performs the design related tasks
including, Project Engineering drawing preparation, submittal package preparation, construction
package and wiring diagram preparation, As built package preparation, part order placement, site
status tracking and completion of any related tasks to make sure the engineering requirements are
met and project is ready and proceeding as planned for construction. The Industrial Controls Design
Engineer provides regular updates to Design Engineering Manager and is in continuous
communication with project management office, field electrical team during construction phase as
well as providing support for QA/QC, field engineers and other team members.
Position Responsibilities Include:
• Attend sales to operations project kick-off and handover meeting
• Work in team with more design engineers and design engineering manager on assigned
projects
• Review required documents (P&ID, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, architectural, etc.
drawings sets and equipment shop drawings & project specifications)
• Ensure codes, standards and client preferences are incorporated into the design
• Independently perform detailed design to produce deliverables such as panel & equipment
layouts, grounding layouts, cable schedules, panel drawings & schedules, control
schematics, zone area classification drawings, single line diagrams and wiring diagrams in
submittal and IFC drawing sets
• Design Instrumentation Controls System (ICS) Panels and Instrumentation Marshaling
Cabinets (IMC)
• Select SCADA, PLC or field bus I/O per client requirement and performance specifications
• Value engineer material selection in accordance with optimal application adhering to
specifications and company standards
• Select HART transmitters and intrinsically safe barriers as required
• Panel, field device and valve selection in accordance with client, industry and company
standards
• Create material deviation report and prepare and maintain BOM for assigned projects for
project management team to facilitate part ordering necessary to complete the project
• Understanding of ISO 9001 and quality management systems (QMS)
• Create QA/QC documentation such as factory acceptance tests (FAT), site acceptance tests
(SAT), user acceptance tests (UAT), punch lists and non-conformance & corrective actions
(NCR) report
• Perform proper revision control of documentation generated and assist project
administrator & QA/QC engineer with maintaining document control register
• Update quality management software from controls drawing for field to provide inputs
• Ensure field red lines are incorporate into final as-built
• Provide written or on-site assistance to project management to coordinate instrumentation
locations with mechanical and electrical contractors
• Support panel shop lead or foreman to ensure panels are prefabricated according to
drawings
• Bench-test hardware designs or safely point-to-point typical prefabricated panel(s) prior to
FAT to mitigate any unsure risk
• Communicate with engineering manager and project management team feedback on issues
expected and any timeline updates and delays expected
• Ensures that all projects are done on time and on budget communicated by the project
management team and accurately as per intended spec, and deviations are reported to
design engineering manager/project management team.
• Participate in the peer-reviews, weekly design engineering meeting and training programs
to improve skills
Required qualifications & competencies:
• Instrumentation Engineering, Process Controls Engineering, Mechanical Engineering,
Controls Engineering, Electronics or Computer Engineering, Technologist Diploma or Master
of Engineering in related field
• Understanding of mechanical system and electrical fundamentals
• Interest in industrial controls, HVAC or related fields
• Interested in gaining experience with construction environment
• Experience with CAD software such as AutoCAD, DraftSight or MS Visio
• Eager to learn and improve skills
