CONTRIBUTING TO THE CMPA
The Safe Medical Care & Equity Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) group contributes to the key strategic objective of advancing safe medical care, by leveraging knowledge and expertise to identify member needs, and better understand their medico-legal risk. The group works with corporate and safe medical care analytics and uses these insights to create knowledge translation products to design and deliver learning to enhance the safety, reliability, and quality of healthcare in Canada. The group collaborates with Member Experience physician advisors to construct a dynamic approach towards member needs assessment, learning product evolution, evaluation and continuous improvement. The group also leads a collaborative approach to implementing the Organizational Learning Program Plan, which endeavours to provide a robust learning environment that will support staff, leaders, and councillors in their ongoing learning and skills development. In addition, this group plays a pivotal role in driving the integration of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion principles throughout the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA). Position Overview
Reporting to the Executive Director, Safe Medical Care and EDI, and as a member of senior management, The Director, Planning & Innovation, Safe Medical Care & EDI provides strategic, operational, and project management leadership across the SMC-EDI portfolio, with a focus on driving innovation, optimizing processes, and enhancing effectiveness. The Director, Planning & Innovation, Safe Medical Care & EDI identifies and assesses risks to achieving the operational plan and budget and escalates risk mitigation plans to the Executive Director.
The Director, Planning & Innovation, Safe Medical Care & EDI provides leadership to a multidisciplinary team focused on supporting and guiding Safe Medical Care and EDI departments by providing expertise through activities such as, but not limited to: planning and project management/coordination, data analysis, instructional/electronic design, evaluation and performance metrics and accreditation with the end goal of leading the efficient and effective delivery of services to members and employees. The Director will oversee the department as it builds business cases, conducts evaluation of programs and products, drives efficiency and innovation and process improvement initiatives and acts as a resource to the other departments within the portfolio. The Director is accountable for Departmental outcomes and impacts and brings forward potential risks as well as mitigation strategies.
POSITION ACTIVITIES
Strategic Leadership
Develops and implements short and medium-term departmental plans, practices, and procedures that are consistent with CMPA's policies and procedures and are aligned with the organization's objectives and consistent with industry standards.
Develops a multi-year operational plan and budget to achieve departmental and corporate objectives. Ensures the departmental plan, budget, people resources and operating activities are conducted in accordance with CMPA policies and guidelines.
Collaborates with portfolio leadership to align departmental goals with CMPA's broader strategic priorities, including modernization of learning offerings, increased audience reach, and reimagined group operations.
Facilitates integrated, portfolio-wide planning processes and prioritization cycles, ensuring all potential projects are considered based on member needs, analyzed data, and organizational trends.
Advice & Expertise
Accountable and provides expertise in the planning, design, implementation, monitoring, performance and evaluation of corporate and strategic initiatives and other projects undertaken by the Safe Medical Care and EDI portfolio.
Provides leadership in establishing and maintaining efficient project planning, management and performance evaluation frameworks across all departments and teams.
Provides advice and consultation to the Executive Director, Senior Leadership within the portfolio, and relevant stakeholders on issues within the department drawing on specific functional expertise.
Oversees the development and implementation of standardized workflows for content development, accreditation, and evaluation, leveraging best practices and data-driven insights.
Is accountable for project teams delivery of high-quality research, learning programs and products.
Champions process improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency, reduce duplication, and clarify roles and responsibilities within the portfolio.
Leads the integration of modern technologies, such as AI and Learning Management Systems, to streamline operations and improve content production.
Leads detailed studies on design processes to identify bottlenecks and implement solutions for greater agility and effectiveness.
Fosters a culture of collaboration, respect, and innovation across teams, promoting shared accountability and continuous improvement
Work closely with other department directors, including Safe Medical Care Insights & Thought Leadership and Office of EDI & Organizational Learning, to ensure integrated approaches to learning, research, and equity initiatives.
Oversees the evaluation of programs and products, ensuring alignment with strategic objectives and continuous improvement based on key performance indicators.
Supports the development and implementation of competency-based frameworks to define clear expectations for roles at all levels.
Monitors cumulative delivery risk (capacity, change fatigue, dependency conflicts); design risk mitigation strategies and brings forward options to the Executive Director for consideration.
People Leadership
Leads the Planning & Innovation Department including effectively guiding work (i.e., ensuring the team's work aligns with the vision and values, removing obstacles that interfere with the team's ability to achieve their goals, defining Planning & Innovation objectives)
Builds capacity and provides leadership, coaching and direction to the department including assisting with career development, coaching to advance skills, motivating employees to do their best work, promoting cross-department/cross-business capability collaboration, creating an environment that values open communication, trust, experimentation, etc.)
Provides leadership and guidance to a team of direct reports and provides regular feedback, coaching and mentoring, including the annual performance appraisal.
Creates a culture of accountability and empowerment. Encourages continuous learning and development.
Promotes a work environment that fosters teamwork, collaboration, respect and inclusion within the department and throughout the Association
Education And Experience
University Degree in Business Administration or equivalent with additional training in strategic planning, risk management, performance measures, and evaluation.
Completion of an MBA is desirable.
A minimum of 10 years of relevant work experience, including a minimum of 5 years of experience providing advice and consultation to senior leaders on business operations/planning, project management performance measurement, and leading cross-functional teams.
Experience managing operational plans, budgets, and performance metrics.
Experience coaching and mentoring individuals and teams to meet their full potential.
Previous experience working with senior management, executive decision-makers and stakeholders.
Experience building and maintaining trusted relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
Extensive experience and expertise in project management, performance measurement, developing business cases, and evaluating complex systems and solutions.
Demonstrated knowledge of business process improvement and quality concepts.
Demonstrated experience working with corporate data and synthesizing information into reports or briefs.
Experience with learning program design, evaluation, and accreditation processes is an asset.
Familiarity with AI technologies, Learning Management Systems, and data-driven decision-making preferred.

POSTING DETAILS
Job type: This is a regular full-time opportunity.
This posting is for a newly created role.
Salary range: $156,100 to 208,800 – this role is classified as a level D1.
Location: Hybrid - Primary Remote. You can work from a home-based office the majority of the time within the provinces of Ontario and Québec, with regular on-site presence at the CMPA office (1-2 days per week). If you prefer, you can choose to work out of the CMPA office in Ottawa, Ontario near the beautiful Dow's Lake.
