About
This position is essential for the year-round maintenance and operational delivery of City services. During the summer season, you will be responsible for the safe transport and delivery of caliper trees from the Old Man Creek Tree Nursery to various planting sites across the City. When winter arrives, your focus will shift to snow removal and ice control at various locations to ensure the safety and accessibility of our shared spaces. You will operate a range of equipment, from 5-ton tandem trucks to specialized tractors and ice resurfacers. This role requires a high level of accountability, a commitment to safety, and the ability to adapt to changing seasonal requirements. You will work closely with internal teams and interact with members of the public to provide excellent service.
What will you do?
As an Equipment Operator 2 in the Summer:
Operate a 5-ton tandem truck and trailer to deliver caliper trees to various planting sites across the City
Collaborate with your team to load and unload trees, following safe rigging and lifting practices
Manage tree shipments and disposal, including the daily transport of root plugs to the Edmonton Waste Management Center ensuring all loads are secured and tarped according to National Safety Code (NSC) regulations
Conduct daily pre- and post-trip equipment inspections, documenting any issues and performing minor maintenance to ensure everything is ready for work
Complete and organize essential paperwork, including hazard assessments (FLHAs), work logs, and daily task cards
Participate in duties around the Nursery as assigned including operation of skid steers, track loaders, tractors and manual labour tasks
Maintain shrub beds through active planting, pruning, weeding, and watering as needed
As a Labourer 2 in the Winter:
Perform snow removal and maintenance for parking lots, sidewalks, and outdoor ice surfaces using specialized plow trucks and tractors as well as a variety of hand tools and walk behind equipment
Support the construction and maintenance of outdoor skating rinks using 3-ton water trucks and ice resurfacers
Conduct daily pre- and post-trip equipment inspections, documenting any issues and performing minor maintenance to ensure everything is ready for work
Utilize hand tools like shovels and chippers to clear snow and maintain park facilities for public access
Communicate professionally and respectfully with collaborators and engagement participants when providing information about maintenance activities
Complete and organize essential paperwork, including hazard assessments (FLHAs), work logs, and daily task cards
Qualifications:
Completion of the tenth (10th) school grade
One (1) year experience in forestry operations/snow and ice control
Two (2) years' experience operating air-brake equipped trucks and trailers
Skills required for success:
Ability to identify various tree species (to the genus level) and recognize damage to stems or root balls
Experience operating ice resurfacers or specialized ice-clearing equipment
Familiarity with the City of Edmonton's geographic locations and routing
Strong knowledge of safety practices, OH&S standards, and environmental programs like ENVISO
Proficiency in operating heavy equipment, including tandem trucks, tractors, and front-end loaders
Ability to read and verify labels against load lists to ensure accurate tree delivery
Excellent physical coordination and manual dexterity for using hand tools and ride-on equipment
Basic computer skills for email, data entry, and accurate time sheet submission
Ability to work effectively within a team and follow guidance from Crew Leaders

Conditions of Employment:
Valid Alberta Class 3 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent) with Air Brake Endorsement or higher. Obtaining and maintaining a Class D City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
Successful candidates will be fit for a respirator, and compliance with the City of Edmonton's Code of Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment, including medical monitoring, is a requirement of this position
Compliance with the City of Edmonton's safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as wearing steel-toe boots, gloves, goggles, sunscreen and coveralls
Possession of current Standard First Aid, CPR-C and AED certifications
Work Environment:
The role involves working outdoors in various weather conditions and terrains
Exposure to environmental conditions, including extreme temperatures, inclement weather, dust, noise, light variation, vibrations, chemicals, animals, and exposure to mechanical and electrical hazards may occur
This role requires completion of repetitive and strenuous tasks such as standing, walking, kneeling, bending, stooping, crouching, lifting items up to 100 pounds, pushing, pulling, reaching, using feet/hand control requiring physical stamina and resilience
Availability to work a variety of shifts, which may include 24/7 coverage including nights and/or weekends during the winter SNIC program
