The University of Alberta, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, Department of Critical Care Medicine in partnership with Alberta Health Services and Covenant Health, invites applications for an Assistant Professor to be based within the Edmonton Zone. Located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
The Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry has been internationally recognized as among the world's top 50 medical schools and as one of Canada's premier health-education institutions. The University is currently home to more than 38,000 students with more than 15,000 faculty and staff.
The Department of Critical Care Medicine, within the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, is a growing research and education-focused Department, currently consisting of 6 Full-Time and 7 Special-Continuing Academic Faculty and over 50 Clinical Faculty, across two teaching and three community Alberta Health Services' operated hospitals (covering ~ 144 ICU beds in 8 ICUs) in the city of Edmonton. The Department has a fully accredited Royal College training program in Critical Care Medicine and overseas the ICU training of numerous rotating specialist programs. Research in the Department spans a wide spectrum from basic science and translational work through health services research and clinical trials across all aspects of the practice of Critical Care Medicine.
Responsibilities
Key accountabilities of the Assistant Professor will include, but will not be limited to, developing and leading an innovative research program, along with contributions to education and educational scholarship, particularly in the themes of serious illness communication and clinical ethics.
This recruitment aims to fulfill the Department's evolving research priorities in the themes of serious illness communication, clinical ethics, and palliative and end-of-life care. This position will primarily focus on research as a dominant theme with a substantial contribution to education (and education scholarship). The selected candidate will be expected to develop and lead an innovative investigator-initiated research program. The selected candidate will be expected to foster collaboration with national and international research groups. The candidate is expected to apply for operating research support (i.e., Canadian Institutes of Health Research), work to expand the Department's research capacity, and to supervise and mentor learners, graduate students and emerging faculty. The selected candidate will have at least 50% of their position protected for their academic portfolio in research and education.
Qualifications
The successful candidate will be certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada with an MD, FRCPC, possess a specialist certificate or equivalent in Critical Care Medicine, and be eligible for licensure with College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA).
The successful candidate will be offered a contingent tenure-track appointment in the Department of Critical Care Medicine, with the rank of Assistant Professor, which is in accordance with the University of Alberta Faculty Agreement , and offers a comprehensive benefits package .
Remuneration for this position is based on the Academic Medicine & Health Services Program (AMHSP). Salary will be commensurate with education and experience.
