The Opportunity
General Bank of Canada is looking for a permanent, fulltime Senior Data Analyst to join as a key contributor with the Bank's Data, Technology and Innovation (DTI) team. Consistent with the growth trajectory of the Bank, this is an excellent opportunity for the right individual to contribute to building the Bank of the future with considerable potential for learning, growth, and advancement.
The Senior Data Analyst is responsible for analyzing and transforming data into meaningful insights that drive informed and strategic decision-making. This role will develop and maintain advanced analytical models, including statistical and machine learning models, as well as build dashboards, data extraction and transformation logic, as well as reports and dashboards to ensure accuracy and relevance in business processes.
The Senior Data Analyst will take a hands-on approach to advanced model development, data extraction, validation, and visualization, leveraging SQL, Power BI, Excel, and Python to support analytical needs across the organization. Advanced model development includes all components of the data science lifecycle, including exploratory data analysis (EDA), feature engineering, model evaluation and selection using appropriate statistical and machine learning techniques, as well as visualization of model and data output. Additionally, the role will contribute to data quality and governance efforts, collaborating with data engineers, architects, and business colleagues to ensure consistency and accuracy in reporting and analytics, while strengthening modeling rigor and supporting the growth of the organization's data and analytics capabilities.
Position Responsibilities
- Data Analysis & Modeling: Analyze complex datasets to identify trends, patterns, and insights that support data-driven decision-making. This includes the development of advanced analytical models for exception reporting, regulatory analysis, corporate performance evaluation, and forecasting to assess business impacts and opportunities. Apply statistical and machine learning techniques where appropriate to enhance accuracy and predictive capability.
- Dashboard & Reporting Development: Design, build, and maintain interactive Power BI dashboards and reports, ensuring accuracy, performance, and usability. Automate reporting processes where possible and work with business teams to refine visualizations that support business objectives and enable self-service analytics.
- Data Extraction & Transformation: Utilize SQL, Excel, and Python to extract, clean, and transform data from multiple sources, ensuring data quality and consistency. Build reusable queries, datasets, and feature sets to support self-service reporting, advanced analysis, and model development.
- Advanced Analytics & Model Development: Conduct exploratory data analysis (EDA), feature engineering, and the development, comparison, and evaluation of statistical and machine learning models. Ensure models are validated, monitored, and refined to maintain accuracy and business relevance.
- Data Governance & Performance Monitoring: Support data governance by ensuring accuracy, reconciliation, and compliance with quality standards. Monitor key business metrics, flag anomalies, and assist in identifying root causes and recommending corrective actions. Contribute to model governance practices, including documentation and performance monitoring.
- Collaboration: Work closely with cross-functional teams to understand analytical needs, translate them into data and model‑driven solutions, and present findings in a clear and actionable manner. Provide guidance on analytical methods and the interpretation of model outputs.
- Data Storytelling & Business Enablement: Communicate complex analytical and model‑driven insights in a clear, compelling, and accessible way. Help business units understand key drivers, model outputs, and their implications, and support education on data concepts, analytical approaches, and self-service tools to strengthen data literacy across the organization.
- Continuous Improvement & Innovation: Stay current with industry trends and emerging technologies in analytics, data science, data visualization, and modeling. Identify opportunities to improve analytical capabilities, tooling, and reporting efficiency through new methods, automation, and enhanced modeling approaches.
What You Bring to the Table
Required Qualifications
- A bachelor's degree in business, statistics, economics, finance, or technology is required, and a master's degree in a quantitative field is considered an asset. Demonstrated equivalent experience will also be considered.
- 5+ years of experience in data analysis, business intelligence, or a related field, including hands-on experience with statistical analysis, predictive modeling, and machine learning techniques in practical business settings. Experience working in a financial institution or other regulated environment is preferred.
- Proficiency in SQL, Power BI, Excel, and Python for data extraction, analysis, modeling, and reporting, including experience with common data science libraries such as pandas, NumPy, scikit-learn, and statsmodels. Familiarity with version control tools such as Git, notebook environments such as Jupyter, and working with large or complex datasets is an asset.
- Experience developing dashboards, conducting advanced modeling, and performing complex data analysis, with the ability to assess analytical approaches, validate model performance, and interpret results to support decision‑making. Experience with FI analytical domains is an asset, including work with credit scoring, fraud detection models, or other financial risk and performance models.
- Strong understanding of data validation, reconciliation, and governance best practices, including maintaining consistency, transparency, and rigor throughout analytical and modeling workflows.
