Job Description:
CapWest is seeking a highly organized, hands-on Yard Manager to lead the successful setup, transition, and ongoing operation of our new Coquitlam yard. This is a critical role responsible for ensuring the yard is established correctly from day one, including layout planning, traffic flow, storage strategy, equipment organization, safety compliance, and cross-division coordination.
In the interim phase, the Yard Manager will play a major role in transitioning operations out of our existing yard(s), including consolidating inventory and equipment, supporting the close-out of old yard locations, and streamlining our yard management into one efficient hub. This position requires a strong balance of leadership, logistics, communication, and operational discipline.
The Yard Manager will work closely with multiple CapWest divisions, including (but not limited to): Forming, Pumping, Equipment Rentals, Pre-Fab, Civil, Drywall, Metal Panel, Electrical, and future ventures.

What You Will Do:
New Yard Setup & Transition Leadership
- Lead the operational setup of the new Coquitlam yard to support current and future CapWest growth.
- Coordinate the physical move with assistance from Cap West Equipment team and consolidation from previous yard(s) into the new yard location.
- Support the closure / wind-down of former yard locations, including ensuring equipment and materials are accounted for and removed.
- Work with management to implement a clear yard layout plan and providing feedback on areas that could be improved, including:
- storage zones (by division / equipment type)
- laydown areas
- sea-can / container placement
- vehicle and delivery traffic flow
- loading and staging areas
- Liaise with each division to understand their needs and ensure maximum utilization of yard space without conflict.
Yard Operations & Daily Coordination
- Manage day-to-day yard operations including receiving, staging, storage, dispatch, and returns.
- Coordinate with dispatch/ops teams on scheduled movements and deliveries.
- Ensure the yard stays organized, functional, and ready for daily operations.
- Act as the primary point of contact for all yard-related needs and issues.
- Maintain strong control of access, site conduct, and yard rules.
Equipment / Material Control & Accountability
- Ensure accurate tracking and accountability for equipment, materials, and tools entering and leaving the yard, as lead by the Equipment Operations Manager.
- Implement yard check-in / check-out controls (including for internal crews, subcontractors, and deliveries).
- Identify missing, damaged, misallocated, or unreturned items and escalate appropriately.
- Coordinate equipment readiness and staging to reduce downtime and improve field productivity.
Safety, Housekeeping & Compliance
- Maintain high safety standards and enforce CapWest yard rules and procedures.
- Ensure safe storage practices (rigging points, stacking, barricades, signage, etc.).
- Conduct regular yard inspections and address hazards immediately.
- Ensure proper yard housekeeping standards are met daily (waste control, cleanliness, designated zones).
- Support and enforce WorkSafeBC compliance standards alongside the Safety team.
Reporting, Documentation & Continuous Improvement
- Maintain yard logs and operational reporting (deliveries, issues, damages, incidents).
- Recommend and implement improvements to reduce waste, downtime, double-handling, and clutter.
- Support systems and tracking tools (ex. Texada, inventory logs, checklists).
- Provide weekly updates to management on:
- operational issues
- space concerns
- equipment/material concerns
- improvements needed
What You Bring:
- 5+ years' experience managing a construction materials yard or similar industrial environment
- Firsthand experience with concrete formwork systems including panels, ties, hardware, shoring, and reshoring
- Certified and experienced operating forklifts and telehandlers
- Strong working knowledge of wood framing materials
- Experience using inventory systems (manual and/or digital)
- Solid understanding of jobsite material flow including receiving, staging, returns, and redeployment
- Proven experience loading and unloading flat deck trailers
- Experience managing daily yard operations, workflow, and productivity
- Strong background in inventory management, procurement, cycle counts, and material tracking
- Ability to efficiently schedule crews and equipment to meet operational demands
- Proven experience coordinating with project managers, site superintendents, and dispatch or planning teams
- Proven experience supervising yard foremen, laborers, and equipment operators
- Experience using inventory systems (manual and/or digital)
- Familiarity with dispatch logs, delivery tickets, and damage or loss reporting
- Comfortable using tablets, smartphones, and basic software including Excel and inventory applications
Salary Range:
$100,000 - $130,000
