The Role 

The Humane Education Facilitator is a member of the Humane Education team and works closely with the Humane Educator, Camps & Clubs Team Lead, and the Supervisor, Humane Education. This role facilitates, administers, and supports Humane Education programs and offerings to ensure safe, engaging, and meaningful experiences for all participants. The Facilitator will primarily lead birthday parties and may also assist with delivering EHS' Pet-Sitters Course, group presentations, camps, clubs, events, and future Humane Education initiatives.

Key Roles & Responsibilities Preparation & Delivery of Individual Programs
  • Presents, facilitates, and collaborates on Humane Education programs, including birthday parties, camps, clubs, the Pet-Sitters Course, facility tours, and future initiatives.
  • Ensures the safety and wellbeing of participants, shelter animals, and Animal Ambassadors by conducting regular headcounts and addressing concerns promptly.
  • Prepares, sets up, delivers, and cleans up program activities, including managing resources and inventory.
  • Works with Behaviour and Medical departments, following standard Humane Education procedures, to select appropriate shelter animals for programs.
Delivery of Group Programs
  • Presents and facilitates on-site and off-site educational programs, including externally delivered, revenue-generating programming such as group presentations, facility tours, and future Humane Education initiatives.
  • Ensures participant safety, including the wellbeing of shelter animals and Animal Ambassadors, by using proactive classroom management and addressing concerns promptly.
  • Prepares, sets up, delivers, and cleans up program activities and resources for all group and external programs.
  • Collaborates with Behaviour and Medical departments, following standard Humane Education procedures, to select appropriate shelter animals for programs.
Customer Service
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the Edmonton Humane Society's vision, mission, values, and initiatives.
  • Represents EHS as an ambassador during Humane Education programs and other events to promote Humane Education and increase awareness of EHS's work.
  • Addresses customer complaints in collaboration with the supervisor, providing timely solutions and follow-up to ensure satisfaction.
  • Delivers programs that are engaging and enjoyable while providing meaningful educational value.
Administrative Tasks
  • Shares feedback on program successes and challenges with the Humane Education team.
  • Completes minor administrative tasks, including waiver collection and inventory tracking.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Education & Requirements
  • High School Diploma or equivalent; must be 18 years of age or older. An education degree or related coursework is considered an asset.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of customer service experience in a recreation, childcare, or educational setting.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience working with children in a group setting.
  • Comfortable handling and has prior experience with cats, dogs, and small animals.
  • Standard First Aid and CPR Level C certification 
  • Successful completion of a Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sector Check are required.
Skills & Abilities

The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong leadership skills and the ability to guide guests in a fun, respectful, engaging, and positive manner. They will be flexible, able to work independently with minimal supervision, and available to work multiple weekdays, evenings, and weekends each month. The ideal candidate will also have dependable transportation to support their work schedule.

Compensation & Benefits

The Humane Education Facilitator role is classified in Pay Band 2, with a pay range of $17.84–$23.18 per hour, commensurate with the successful candidate's education and experience.

Hours of Work
  • Standard hours: 20 hours per week; however, this position is expected to work the hours necessary to fulfill departmental responsibilities.
  • Flexibility may be required for evenings, weekends or special events.
