Salary: $167.70 per day  

Reports To: Summer Camp Manager

Nature & Scope

YMCA Camp Elphinstone is seeking individuals to fill the role of Out-trip (OT) Supervisor. The OT Supervisor oversees all aspect of out-trip programming including registered out-trip programs, Leadership Development trips, and onsite overnight experiences for twelve-day camper cabins. 

In this role, OT Supervisor oversees and supports, the planning, preparation, and deliver of every out-trip, ensuring all programs meet BCCA standards and YMCA policies and procedures, and industry best practices. This position requires strong expertise in out-tripping, including outdoor skills instruction and informed guidance on risk management. The OT Supervisor provides training, supervision and evaluation, and support to the out-tripping team. The OT Supervisor is expected to step into programming and lead trips when required.

The OT Supervisor also manages the care and upkeep of all tripping equipment, ensuring everything remains in safe working order and fully prepared for each excursion.

The OT Supervisor is a member of the Supervisor team. The Supervisor team collaborates closely with the Summer Camp Manager and Assistant Summer Camp Manager to foster a positive camp culture and prioritize the safety and well-being of all campers. Dedicated to delivering a 5-star experience for campers and their families, Section Supervisors play a key role in the development and facilitation of summer staff training. Supervisors participate in scheduling staff, managing program budgets, driving camp vehicles, and facilitating the success of their section of camp.

Major Responsibilities- in this position, you will

  • Provide direct supervision to the 6 out-tripping staff. Provide leadership and role modelling to all staff.
  • Assist with developing and delivering innovative training that supports professional development of staff and volunteers.
  • Ensure that all out-tripping policies/procedures and Camp Elphinstone's high risk management standards are met at all times by all participants and staff while on on-site overnights or off-site out-trips.
  • Manage all aspects of the out-tripping program including, scheduling, coordinating transportation, ensuring groups are prepared and equipped with necessary gear and supplies, and managing all related administrative tasks.
  • Assist in purchasing supplies and managing the budget for the OT program.
  • Support with sign-in and sign-out days.
  • Collaborate with other member of the Supervisor team to support all sections of camp.
  • Ensure the safety of all members, participants, staff, and property by following YMCA standards/policies/procedures and ensuring they are maintained amongst all participants and staff.
  • Camp staff are expected to contribute to the success of camp by completing tasks in addition to those listed above. These may include, but are not limited to: cleaning, preparing program materials, and transporting and maintaining equipment.
  • Qualification-you bring :

  • Strong leadership skills, and the ability to foster an inclusive and collaborative culture among staff

  • Proven ability to solve problems independently

  • 3 years of experience in camping, youth recreations, and/or outdoor education

  • Previous experience planning and leading backpacking and canoe trips

  • Wilderness First Aid (40 hour), Wilderness First Responder considered an asset.

  • In accordance with BCCA Standards, all out-trip leaders must be 19 by July 5th, 2026

  • BC Class 4 Driver's License (or willing to obtain) and experience driving trailers

  • Successful candidate will be required to provide 3 satisfactory references 
  • Successful candidates will be required to provide a current and satisfactory Criminal Record check with a Vulnerable sector search issued no later than six (6) months preceding the start date.

  • About Camp Elphinstone:

    YMCA Camp Elphinstone, located near Gibsons on the Sunshine Coast, is just a 40-minute ferry ride from Horseshoe Bay, Vancouver. Nestled on 144 acres of temperate rainforest along the shores of Howe Sound, the camp offers a variety of programs for youth ages 5-17 during July and August. These include one- and two-week overnight camps, Leadership Development programs, multi-day paddling and hiking trips, and day camps. From September to June, Camp Elphinstone functions as an Outdoor Education, Event, and Retreat Centre, hosting schools, conferences, weddings, and other special interest groups. Annually, the camp serves over 10,000 participants.

    YMCA Camp Elphinstone can accommodate and dine up to 472 campers or guests. During July and August, the camp employs around 140 staff and volunteers, while the spring and fall Outdoor Education seasons see a team of 20-50 members. In the winter season, a smaller core team of 10 staff members is maintained. Successful staff at Camp Elphinstone are self-motivated individuals dedicated to helping children and youth thrive in an outdoor camp setting, and they are committed to providing 5-star customer service to all client groups.
