Role Description
The Senior Electrical Designer/Technologist will be responsible for managing the design execution of projects involving the application of common electrical design principles and design theory (power and I&C) to develop solutions to meet the customer's project requirements. This position will require a resource that possesses a sound working knowledge of standard electrical design practices and applicable codes and be able to independently apply that knowledge into functional design packages.
The Senior Electrical Designer will gather information from various project stakeholders as required, including other disciplines, vendors, engineers, reference drawings and catalogs to produce complete, functional and constructible design packages in order to meet the project design requirements. The individual will be responsible for the construction of scenarios from various information sources, consider alternatives, develop details and follow through with solid workable solutions for design problems. This position will be expected to provide guidance and oversight to others on the design / drafting team who may be assigned to work with the individual.
Areas of Accountability:
Prepare electrical designs for medium to large sized projects (generation and substation design considered an asset).
Development of clear, accurate and complete drawing packages to be issued for construction purposes
Apply electrical design knowledge in applications including:
- Area classification
- Power distribution including single-lines, electrical layouts, cable tray layouts, cable schedules,
junction box layouts and wiring schematics
- Grounding details
- Lighting
- E-house layout
- Contactor / control panel design
- Heat-tracing
- Instrumentation layout
- Control Systems design
- Electrical equipment sizing
- Equipment specification and selection
Assist with equipment specification, bidding, evaluation and procurement activities
Lead field investigation efforts as part of the design effort requirements
Interact with all disciplines at project meetings, model reviews, etc.
Collaborate with E&IC engineers to provide support, assistance, contribute solutions and introduce efficiencies
Participate in design coordination with engineers and other technical discipline design leads in the completion of drawing packages
Review and check design drawings and vendor shop drawings
Contribute to estimating, scheduling and status reporting on assigned projects
Independently evaluate, select and apply standard design techniques, procedures and criteria
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess:
10+ years' experience in the field of electrical engineering design
2-year SAIT/NAIT or equivalent diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology
Skills and knowledge of electrical/control system design
Strong familiarity with CEC (Canadian Electrical Code), other applicable codes, standards and acceptable industry practices
Familiar with field construction/installation techniques and able to lead field status reviews and/or investigations
Knowledge of 3D modeling, AutoCad or Microstation is not required, but considered an asset
In-depth understanding of the design process, bidding and procurement, fabrication, construction and documentation required throughout the project
Demonstrated ability to execute during all project phases, from inception through close-out
Proven ability to build and maintain positive relationships with clients, team members and other department individuals
Strong communication skills (both verbal and written)
Self-motivated with a strong work ethic
Strong ability to organize and prioritize work to meet deadlines
