Fort McMurray Catholic Schools is looking for a full-time Educational Assistant in Elementary grades 1-6.
Qualifications
Educational Assistant Certificate AND/OR Bachelors Degree in Education, English, Linguistics or similar is required
Division Literacy Certification and the 2023/2024 refresher training preferred; if no applicants with both, then candidates with the 2023/2024 refresher training will be considered; if no applicants with the refresher training, then candidates with working experience in a Literacy position from 2024/2025 will be considered; if no candidates identified then must possess the required educational background for the 2025/2026 school year
Successful candidate will be required to participate in ongoing literacy and numeracy training
Requirements
Work on literacy, numeracy, and/or ELL approaches with individual students or small groups
Work collaboratively under guidance from the CST, the teacher(s) and any other member of the multidisciplinary team to support children with literacy and numeracy needs
Plan daily reading, writing or numeracy activities under the direction of teacher or CST
Adhere to the guidelines set out within reading programs (Fountas and Pinnell, Jolly Phonics, etc) and evaluate effectiveness of strategies being used
Follow any IPP/ISP strategies as directed by the teacher and CST
Able to communicate the reading level of students and give strategies for reading, writing, and word decoding to students and parents
Able to work with technology and implement iPads, Chromebooks, and SmartBoards, etc into daily intervention
Understanding of vocabulary topics within a unit to assist with pre-teaching concepts from the curriculum
Implement ELL approaches that may include vocabulary development, speaking english, reading and writing development
Implement daily record keeping for student literacy, numeracy, or ELL portfolio
Complete term progress checklists with teacher
Provides support to the general operation of the school
Communicate effectively with students using age appropriate positive reinforcements and/or school specific behaviour strategies
Employee is expected to work with behaviours related/associated with conduct, obsessive/compulsive, trauma and stress related, severe chronic depressive, feeding and/or eating disorders etc. Other behaviours related to ADHD, emotional/behavioural, learning and speech & language-related disabilities, etc may be encountered.
The successful candidate will be required to provide a Criminal Reference Check and a Vulnerable Sector Check. FMCSD will contact past and present employers for references. All FMCSD employees are expected to be computer literate; this includes fluency with e-mail, Internet and MS Office.
