About

The Planner prepares, executes and monitors the safe and effective planning for loading and discharging containerized shipping vessels.

In this role you will:

  • Prepare the required documents for loading or discharge of containers to or from vessels.

  • Monitors vessel operations to ensure they are being carried out efficiently, accurately and safely.

  • Plan, coordinate and evaluate the day-to-day labour (ILWU foremen and labour) and equipment requirements to ensure operations are cost effective.

  • Identify successes and variances and give advice or opinion as to how to deal with issues.

  • Liaise with yard, gate and rail operations to ensure maximum utilization and optimal efficiency of container yard.

  • Liaise with vessel planners, yard planner, agents, port captains, ship officers or crew as required.

  • Prepare directly vessel performance summaries to customers, billing and operations department.

You will bring to this role:

  • 3 years of experience in logistics or a similar field.
  • A degree in business, logistics or similar field is preferred.

  • A positive, hands on approach and the ability to work as a team member.

  • Excellent people management skills with well-formed motivational skills, including solid negotiation, influencing, change management and labour relations skills.

  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to build and maintain good working relationships and achieve buy in and ownership to quality standards/ initiatives with all departments and levels.

  • Sound judgement and analytical thinking that enables decision making, ability to manage projects and prioritize and manage timelines.

  • Comprehensive understanding of ship loading operations, vessel construction, cargo stowage, cargo securing and applicable regulations.

  • Solid computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office and the proven ability to learn new systems quickly. 

  • Flexibility to meet the requirements of a 24/7 operation.

  • Fluent in English.

  • Previous Canadian work experience or experience working directly with Canadian industries.

DP World Fraser Surrey is a large, multi-purpose marine terminal located on the banks for the Fraser River in the greater Vancouver area of British Columbia, Canada.  Since 1962, our terminal has been serving the needs of our customers with our variety of services including container, breakbulk, project cargo, forest products and bulk. We are only a 2-hour vessel transit from Pacific Ocean access and have excellent proximity to highways, railways and industrial areas. Located just 25 KM from the US border and with 50,000 feet of rail our terminal is an efficient rail and road solution in the Vancouver gateway.
