About the Role

Our Technology Team at Polar is seeking a Junior to Intermediate SQL Database Administrator to support systems running on Microsoft SQL Server, MariaDB, Snowflake, PostgreSQL, and other databases on-premises and in the cloud. You will design, develop, and maintain critical database components for trading and analytical software. You will have the opportunity to partner closely with world-class developers and data scientists to deliver high performance and large-scale database and analytics applications for the investment team.
What You Will Do:
- Monitor and forecast resource utilization and cost optimization
- Enhance data quality and data models in our systems
- Manage user access, roles, and security policies
- Automate auditing and deployment of database changes
- Investigate and resolve performance issues and optimize queries
- Database schema documentation and enforcement according to our standards
- Assist other team members with DB related tasks
Who You Are:
- 2+ years of hands-on experience with Microsoft SQL Server in a production environment
- Strong T-SQL skills (queries, joins, stored procedures, views, indexes, query tuning)
- Experience with SQL Server Agent jobs, backup/restore strategies, replication, partitioning
- Good understanding of database normalization, indexing strategies, and transaction isolation
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with proven ability to work with both technical and non-technical stakeholders in a fast-paced environment
- Basic programming skills – Python and C# preferred, with ability to read code to understand how it interacts with the database and help diagnose production issues
- Familiarity with Windows Server, basic networking concepts, and monitoring tools
- Experience with automation frameworks, simple REST APIs, or ETL tools is a plus
- Experience in financial services is a plus
Compensation: Polar's total compensation package includes base salary, discretionary performance bonus, and a comprehensive benefits package. In accordance with Ontario's Employment Standards Act, 2000, the estimated base salary range for this position is $70,000 to $90,000. The actual base salary pay will depend on several factors, including, but not limited to, the individual's experience level, the qualifications they bring to the role, business needs, and market demands.
